MALINA IN EVERY EPISODE | 1.01 - “A SEARING BURST OF LIGHT”
Freddy Carter | rare pics *part 2
You’re meta is so on point because I always side eye the whole "Alina should’ve ended alone or Mal should’ve remained death” because like - are you reading the same books? Mal is literally her soulmate. Alina is not weak for loving Mal which is often the implication that I dislike. A woman can be a heroine while also being madly in love. As you said, Mal kept Alina together all those years - he was the physical reminder of humanity, and not person on earth gave Alina the feeling of safety and confort other than Mal.
Alina killed with the cut for the first time ever to save Mal. And literally Genya says on the books, not even Misha could be able to help Alina if Mal is dead because she would literally go insane. Every single person of the ravka crew knew Alina would’ve gone ballistic without him. I’m not here for people wishing Alina a life of misery and ultimately becoming Darkles 2.0 for the sake of claiming it’s "badass" and "feminist"- it’s actually terrible how much more suffering they want her to experience.
No, exactly. And I truly do stand by the fact that had Mal remained dead, Alina would have soon followed - by her own hand - which is a fucking tragedy. But the five minutes we see Mal actually dead is the only time in the entire trilogy that we see Alina lose her grip on reality. She doesn't care about anything as soon as Mal is dead. She's just screaming for someone to help her, for someone to bring him back, nothing matters if she doesn't have Mal.
I think fundamentally dislike/misunderstanding of Alina's ending comes from people blurring the line between Alina and their own self-insert, because of how the story is written in first person. It's very very simple to me.
You can read the books and think to yourself "If I was Alina, I would've gone for the immortal all powerful dude." That's fine to think that and think that that's what you would want to do. You can think that in her place you would hate an ending of peace and obscurity. Once again, that's fine! You're not Alina, you're under no obligation to want what she wants.
However. When you read the books, and remove your own desires from what you would want in that world, it is clear as day that there is only one thing Alina wants and one thing Alina chooses over and over again - and that something is Mal. This isn't even subtly written. It's explicit. And it goes the other way too; the only thing Mal wants, and what Mal will choose over and over again is Alina. When the two of them are forced into situations where they cannot choose each other, they are downright miserable. (Cut to S&S where both of them are miserable and struggling because they want each other but the circumstances won't let them).
And you can say that in your position you wouldn't choose that! OK! But you are not Alina. And Alina always will choose Mal. They are each others' homes, they are orphans "with no home but each other", they are the only family each other has, they are their rocks, their safe place, a part of each others' souls. Any ending which did not give the two of them a peaceful life together would not be true to Alina as a character whatsoever. And I also agree with you that it doesn’t make her weak in the slightest to love Mal. God, the fact that she goes through all she goes through and gets a life of peace, surrounded by love from Mal every single day? How many heroines of fantasy literature get that ending with the one they love?! Mal makes her stronger, not weaker. He’s her anchor. She loves her. It’s as simple as that.

Last Song: Time in a tree by Raleigh Ritchie. The guy is so underrated and his latest album Andy is amazing!! He honestly never misses. Also Ninety by Jaden Smith is always on repeat lately.
Last Movie: I'm really into film but kind of fell off recently. I finally got around to watching Cruella which was interesting.
Currently Reading: One Last Stop by Casey McQuiston which I'm really enjoying. I need to make a start on the Grishaverse novels so I can fully engage.
Currently Watching: l usually have a lot on the go. Right now I'm on Loki, Prodigal Son, Suits rewatch and due to start Elite season 4 tomorrow.
Currently Craving: Chocolate! Always chocolate! Though stealing the previous answer, a weekend away would be nice or watching some live music!
Tagging @futureoutoffocus ,@brekker-by-brekkerr and @just-otkazatsya only if you fancy it 🙂

Last Song: Perfect Places by Lorde. I've been on the hunt for songs about being nineteen (news flash: there aren't many) and here's at least one.
Last Movie: To All the Boys: Always and Forever, Lara Jean. This is my favourite of the To All the Boys trilogy (one of the best film trilogies of all time, in my oh so humble opinion). I've been rewatching these movies with my mom and sister since they've never seen them
Currently Reading: I've had trouble sticking to one book recently, so I've been bouncing back and forth between trying to read Again, but Better by Christine Riccio and re-reading Six of Crows in my Grishaverse re-read before I try tackling King of Scars for the first time.
Currently Watching: A lot of random things, depending on my mood. I'm rewatching Shadow & Bone yet again, as well as rewatching Gilmore Girls whenever I need comfort. I'm also watching Loki, and occasionally watching Schitt's Creek and Jane the Virgin. Also I'm in a rewatch of Once Upon a Time, but I don't like this part of the show so I've been avoiding it. Just a lot of different things, as you can see lol. Sometimes I'll randomly start a show and never touch it again.
Currently Craving: I'm not really sure. I think I just want to go on an adventure and escape for a while, and I just really want close connections with other people.

Last Song: My Heart Tells Me by Frank Sinatra. My friend is going through a 40s phase lol.
Last Movie: 2 Hearts. It was an alright movie but to be honest I only watched it because it said that it was listed as a tearjerker and I felt like watching a depressing movie, but I didn’t shed a single tear so that was a let down.
Currently Reading: You because I loved the show. And Little Women because I love the movies. And I am trying to get King of Scars and Rule of Wolves.
Currently Watching: Reign. I’m in love with shows that take place in the past and I love France, so yeah. Rewatching Supernatural, because it is my all time favorite show, highly suggest it for those who haven’t seen it. Teen Wolf, because my sister is obsessed with it. Once Upon A Time. I love it and it is really good. Rewatching Stranger Things, because me little brother is finally old enough to watch it. Emily in Paris because as I mentioned I love France. Loki, because my whole family are big Marvel fans. And lastly, I am also rewatching Gilmore Girls for the seventh time because that show is my childhood.
Currently Craving: Banana Pancakes because they are absolutely delicious. And Shadow and Bone, because… c’mon it’s Shadow and Bone.
@raibarnes22 and anyone else who wants to join.
Something I find interesting about Darklina! is how it has this very seductive, sexy quality to it, which is part of why so many people ship it. It makes me think of the Phantom in Phantom of the Opera and how he was often paralleled with themes like fire and lust and sensuality. Both the Darkling and the Phantom represent these sort of darker fantasies and their relationships with the heroine focus on sexual attraction.
Malina, on the other hand, is more focused on the emotional connection between both characters. It's about a love so deep and completely knowing and seeing one another. I think it's interesting how the story shows that while physical attraction and "sexiness" can be good things, feeling comfortable with the person you choose to spend your time with and feeling loved for who you are, are important as well. Reading Shadow and Bone, I remember feeling that Alina was a bit uncomfortable in her relationship with the Darkling, even before she knew the truth about him. But Mal, for her, represented a feeling of home. Comfort. In a world where everyone sees her for her usefulness to them (i.e. physical power to the Darkling, political power to the Vasily family, etc), Mal sees her for who she is. (And you can say the same things for the relationship dynamics with Christine and her love interests.)
Since we flock to ships like Darklina! and the Phantom x Christine for their inherent sexiness, we shouldn't overlook the importance of having a relationship that feels comfortable and represents multiple facets of love. Because it doesn't mean that Christine and Raoul or Malina have no sort of sexual attraction or chemistry; otherwise we wouldn't get the rooftop scene in Phantom or, you know, the sex scene in Ruin and Rising. But their love runs so much deeper than physical attraction. And I'm not saying the Darkling doesn't have any emotional connection with Alina or that people are wrong for shipping these people. I'm more so pointing out the beauty of a relationship where friendship is the building block for something deeper since these relationships get overlooked in comparison to the "more exciting," "sexier" relationships.
This is important to me because in real life, I think we're often encouraged to enter or maintain relationships because of the physical attraction we feel, rather than focusing on building strong relationships with people we can feel comfortable with. Because butterflies and nervousness might be normal at first, but they can become a warning sign later in a relationship that we're taught to ignore because it's "normal." Listen, find someone who makes you feel great, who you're attracted to, that you enjoy kissing or whatever with (if that's your thing), but don't overlook the importance of finding someone who will truly care about you for you.
this is just the truth
Reblog if you hate Darklina, and think that it is the most toxic ship of the grishaverse.
