Hey Tumblr family!

Last year I raised $1000 for heartsupport in three weeks with the support of my amazing friends and family. So this year I decided to up the stakes. I’m going to raise $1000 for HeartSupport…in NINE days. And here’s the why and the how.

Why: Because I believe in what they’re doing. Someone in the US dies every 12.3 minutes by suicide. 2 in 3 people suffering from depression won’t seek treatment. Depression is the cause of 2/3s of suicides. See how it all loops together? I’ve lost friends to suicide. I’ve lost friends to addiction. We don’t have to continue to write that story, and HeartSupport is helping invest into people to seek help and build community. They’ve stood behind me as I dealt with my own personal issues, when my mom was diagnosed with cancer, and through my profession as a photographer. These are GOOD people doing GREAT things. Part of what they do is working on Warped Tour each summer to meet people in their struggle and provide encouragement. In order to do that they need funding. So I’m helping. And you can too.

How: https://donate.heartsupport.com/runforwarped For every $100 that is donated to my page, I’m running a mile. The fundraiser goes now until 10PM April 15. Two days later, I’m running the miles. My goal is $1000, so 10 miles. And here’s why - in my own journey there are two things that have helped me remain sane through it all: HeartSupport and running. So tying the two together just makes sense.

So What?! Music Festival has taken spring by storm once again. This year I was fortunate enough to travel to the festival to shoot for UMusicians as well as help alongside with some interviews for an organization close to my heart, HeartSupport (no pun intended?). HeartSupport was founded by August Burns Red’s vocalist, Jake Luhrs, and exists to create a community for kids in the scene where it’s safe for them to share what they’re going through. Keep an eye out at www.heartsupport.com for some new interviews and blogs as well as to keep up with the cool work their doing and join the community. The line up for this year’s festival was stacked making it hard to choose which bands to shoot let alone which ones to include on UMusicians. I was in photo pits from start to finish on day one photographing Like Pacific, Major League, Seaway, This Wild Life, Emery, 7 Minutes in Heaven, Miss May I, Citizen, Blessthefall, Real Friends, State Champs, Bayside, Neck Deep, and New Found Glory. AND THAT WAS JUST DAY ONE, Y'ALL! Mike Ziemer is at it again. While it was slightly chilly in Texas, the pits were bouncing and the music was rocking. I think it’s safe to say that a fun time was had by all in attendance at So What?! Day 1. See photos from Day 1 of So What?! Music Festival HERE Though Day 2 of So What?! Music Festival was slightly colder than the first, a larger crowd arrived for an even larger party Sunday morning. I think it’s safe to say that many people were there to see Underoath take the stage for their reunion but with acts like Saosin (with Anthony Green), Silverstein, The Devil Wears Prada, Emarosa, Fire From the Gods, and many, many more, fans couldn’t be steered wrong any where they went. I had the good fortune of catching Silent Planet, Emarosa, I See Stars, Fire From the Gods, Silverstein, Beartooth, The Devil Wears Prada, and Saosin. While Underoath was on my schedule, we learned later in the day that we would be unable to photograph them. I saw the set, however, and it was AWESOME. If the reunion tour is headed your way make sure to go and make your own memories! The highlight of my day, though Underoath was awesome, had to have been seeing and shooting Emarosa for the first time. Those guys put on a show and have energy like no other, I could easily fill an entire post just with photos from their set. In an earlier article on UM I mentioned that my favourite part of the festival was the ability to discover new music. I heard two new bands this weekend: 7 Minutes in Heaven (day 1) and Fire From the Gods (day 2). Both will be featured on HeartSupport.com in the coming weeks and have excellent music, make sure you check them out!
