reading an interview with johan cruyff from 1987 and there's a part where he talks about how (really bad in hindsight obviously) where marco van basten had to learn how to play through injury and that players like him benefit from having less time to recover from injuries and the interviewer asks him point blank if marco was his son whether he would interact with him that way..............................
here is the source
some quotes
Do you have a sort of father-son relationship with him?
‘No, no… But of course we do keep in touch. It’s based on a respect for quality. And not, as in the early days, when everyone was so full of him that they thought he’d already made it. At a certain point, you have to take a firm line and say: you’re quite good at this and that, but this and that are still missing. For the simple reason that he needs to keep pushing himself further.’
I’d just like to touch on the personal relationship between you and Van Basten. You see him as part of the team, but you also see him – because of all the extra qualities he has – as someone who’s destined for the big stage. You know what that means. Do you think about that too, and do you talk to him about it?
‘Then he needs to be ready for it. Not much has come of that this year, because he’s had far too many personal issues. Given his injuries, setbacks, even being taken off the pitch once – that sort of thing… you have to get over that. It takes time. So I mustn’t rush things. But of course I talk to him in more detail. Especially about that position where I played for years myself. It’s quite easy to talk about that. Right down to the details. So you do that as well. Look, when you’re coming back from an injury, you normally have to train for three or four weeks. That’s a real drag. It’s a nightmare.’
You mean working on your recovery on your own.
‘Yes. That’s a nightmare for some people and quite manageable for others. For someone like Van Basten, it’s a nightmare.’
Was it the same for you, back in the day?
‘For me too, yes. Then you have to get back into a match. But just playing a friendly doesn’t make sense, because then it all goes out of the window again. Then he’ll manage on sixty per cent. No, he has to work his way up to a hundred from where he is. In proper matches, the chance of him slipping up again is greater. Someone like Van Basten is actually back to his best in two or three weeks without any training. Just because of the pressure, because someone like that always needs pressure and will always take the pressure on. It can’t be any other way, because that’s part of the job.’
Take the pressure on?
‘I mean: if he can wriggle out of it for a moment, he’ll do so.’
If he were your son, would you treat him any differently?
‘No, I don’t think so.’

It wasn’t the leg or the illness or the heat, you told the gaffer when he subbed you off; it was playing on the leg through the illness in the heat. And the dream. Maybe the dream.

Bonmatellas I still think about you 😭 I'm just a casual Barca f fan but I always felt they went from coworkers to friends to coworkers again which upset me a bit
tbh they are such coworkers but also there's just so much history and up and downs experienced together that i would love to fictionalise it in the type of coworkers in a 'villain-of-the-week' type procedural rather than real life.
i also feel like the intensity of football makes it such that everything else is washed away when you are in the moment.
In the end i think it was better though, x. (also really rec following this blog). and ultimately at the end of the day, they were just better friends w/ other teammates, that simple. such is life, such is football.
anyway nostalgiasesh,, look at these: i, ii, she held her for so long even later on. loss will bring us closer!
Any other rpf you're into apart from the Arsenal ones
yes, but not many. I'm so hard to please. but i do keep my mind open to fanworks on stuff and youll see i always reblog anything i find interesting or perhaps want to revisit in the future.
ill try and leave a minor wip for any i mention to make this more interesting to read though.
imagine a world where odevertz meet through h/aaland or something.
