Moffat Takadiwa is known for his simple but intricate installations made from found materials, including spray-can debris, plastic bottle tops and discarded electrical goods. Takadiwa is from Harare, Zimbabwe and Foreign Objects is his first UK solo exhibition.

Takesada Matsutani

Takesada Matsutani was a recognized member of Japan’s avant-garde Gutai Art Association (1954 – 1972) when he set forth to France in 1966 on a journey that would transform his career.

Matsutani’s bold, colorful paintings from the early 1970s, are a radical body of work that reveals the evolution of his earlier formative notions. Soon after moving to Paris and beginning work at renowned engraver Stanley William Hayter’s Atelier 17, Matsutani devoted himself to the techniques of etching, printmaking, and silkscreen. Hayter’s workshop was a center for creative exchange and collaboration, both in Paris and New York, and exerted profound influence upon such artists as Louise Bourgeois, Salvador DalÍ, Max Ernst, Joan Miró and Joan Mitchell.

Matsutani influenced by the theories and history of ‘the image’ in Western culture, and especially by American Minimalism and the Hard-edge paintings of Ellsworth Kelly, began to conceive new compositions, re-arranging and testing the limits of pictorial space. Transforming the same organic and biomorphic forms he first developed in glue, ‘Red-Sun-P’ (1972) (above) and ‘Object P.P.’ (1973) that render the artist’s pooling, curvaceous forms as flat geometric planes of color on canvas.

These are 22 Karat Climax Cups by Romy Northover. They are wheel thrown using a Japaense ‘Rokuro’ method and individually decorated using slips and glazes. 

Northover is an artist and ceramicist now based in New York. Trained in European ceramics she is currently using Japanese techniques of Kinuneri, Tebineri and Rokuro. She describes her style as ancient future.

Lyda was an exuberant, even a dramatic gardener. She would spend hours in her straw hat and gloves, bending over the soil. When somebody walked past her in her work, she was always holding up a lettuce or a bunch of radishes, with an air of resolute courage, as though she had shot them herself.

Wermers creates sculptures, collages and installations which explore the appropriation of art and design within consumer culture..

RobinMackenzie’s Harbour Mouth

Hole & Corner collaborator Robin Mackenzie is an illustrator and printmaker specialising in wood engravings and lino-cuts. Mackenzie is fascinated by traditional folk culture of the British Isles - this is Harbour Mouth a Dorset inspired reduction wood engraving made in the summer of 2015.
