āWell Connor, youāre officially a Detroit Police Detective. Youāre not just an android now, youāre a real employee and will be treated as such. Weāll put you on the pay roll starting today and youāll continue to be Hankās partner.ā Fowler straightened out some papers on his desk, before handing Connor a badge.
āThank you Mr Fowler.ā Connor replied somewhat awkwardly, pinning the badge to his new jacket. Once androids had been granted rights, his old jacket with his model tag had been discarded. He had no need for it anymore. He wasnāt a model. He was Connor, a police detective.Ā
Fowler grunted in reply, and seemed to think for a moment before asking,Ā āSo where are you living now? Before you used to just go back to the Cyberlife tower, but now youāre free. Where do you go after work?ā
Connor smiled,Ā āHank was nice enough to let me move in with him.ā In truth, Hank was like a father to him and he was happy to live in a real home, especially with a dog. Fowler hummed, and took a swig of his coffee.Ā āWell thatās it for now, youāre free to go back to your desk.ā Connor nodded and left the office, making his way back to his desk. He spotted Hank sat at his own desk and smiled as he sat opposite him.Ā
āWhat did Fowler want?ā Hank paused his typing as he spoke, and looked over to Connor.Ā āHe wanted to tell me he was putting me on the pay roll..ā Connor paused.Ā ā..And that Iām officially recognised as a real employee and not a tool to help.ā He smiled as he spoke, feeling happy that humans were accepting his kind so quickly and willingly.
Hank chuckled,Ā āThatās good.ā They went back to working on their computers for a time, before Fowler came over.Ā āHey Connor, I just realised weāve designed your badge to only have your first name on it instead of your last, since technically you donāt really have a last name. But we think it would be more professional for you to have a last name on your badge, and we can also put it into the system so itāll actually be classed as your last name on the records. So...ā
Connor cocked his head to the side, confused.Ā āSo?ā
āWhat do you want your last name to be?ā
Connorās mind went blank. Heād never even thought about having a last name before, let alone would it could be. A few minutes went by, the three men sitting in silence while Connor seemed to think.
Eventually Fowler grew impatient.Ā āConnor? I sortaā need to know now.ā
Connor looked at Hank for a few seconds before shifting his gaze to Fowler, a determined look on his face.
āAnderson. Iād like my name to be Connor Anderson.ā
