It struck me that some of the accomplishments of Jasper Johns' paintings are the very qualities Des Moines' pseudo-tribal pop art enclave ought to brush up on. "...Pop Art is directly sentimental about bad food, standardized sex appeal, and things made for sale rather than use. Otherwise it comments with Gandhian passivity on Industry's use of commodities as satanic instruments of domination. Pop Art either pretends to like junk or criticize it through reductio ad absurdum."-Fairfield Porter Where in contrast Jasper Johns draws on a more complete understanding of cultural objects as having personal value, being physically familiar shapes, composed of a rhythmic application of painterly actions.

Defaced portrait in public library's copy of "LIFEWORKS: Portraits of Iowa Women Artists." What is so problematic about a familial portrait of a female artist? Why did someone feel the need to sexualize this portrait? (sexualizing the artist's young child)

Kenya

Local government forced to follow country law by mass protests. There's this attitude I've encountered. "Don't rock the boat. Complaining won't get anyone anywhere." But here's a living example of justice being accomplished by public outcry.
