Just to add
My heterotopia idea was missing an important feature:
At the edge of where all the containers are, there is just nothing outside of the shipyard. Nothing. So I think that gives it a surreal feel to it.
Ambience
So I did some research on how the ambience would be like in this heterotopia. Smell, sound, time of day, all of that!Â
In terms of sound, I found a video on youtube which pretty much sums it all up:
https://youtu.be/8ppg-WxAqjY
The sound of seagulls, metal and machines reminds me the most of what a shipyard or dock would be like. It could be loud like that but say if I wanted a more eerie feel to it, I’d imagine that slow creaking of stationary ships, wisps of wind and a few seagulls here and there, maybe even the slow working sound of a crane nearby.
I’d imagine a really, really bright day with clear weather and a bit of haze in the distance. The kind of weather you’d find when you go to a beach. I feel like since the sun shining so bright with really clear blue skies, the pathways between ship containers all stacked up would be cold and clammy from the shade and moisture in the air which I think is an interesting contrast. warm and bright on the outside but cold and dark beneath it all, but not too unpleasant.
If you’ve ever been to a port, you’ll recognise that salty smell of the sea, sometimes pleasant, sometimes too fishy in some areas. That´s how I’d imagine this place to smell like.
The feeling of this place would be like its been abandoned, but these places typically don’t have a lot of people roaming around,or much fauna other than a few seagulls and rats on the interior, but not terribly lonely. It would be a cold experience if you were to walk through a maze of stack, rusted containers, but once you’re at the edge of the dock where concrete meets the sea, I’ts warm and welcoming looking out to the hazed horizon of what looks like an endless ocean.
So that’s been my brainstorm for the day, more progress soon!

Heterotopia v.2
Semester 2, we are given yet another heterotopia project and will be posting my progress in a similar manner to the first semester. Hopefully I learn more on the second round!
Heterotopia Treatment/moodboard
Concept Art for the cinema heterotopia
Heterotopia storyboard v.2
(View top to bottom)
Version 2 of the storyboard, still the same idea just a little more interesting to look at... and no toilet!
Heterotopia storyboard v.1
(view from top to bottom)
So this is version 1 of my heterotopia storyboard which is heavily non character based where i tried using p.o.v angling and other different camera angles.
The problem with this storyboard is that it doesn’t really make much sense, especially toward the end because it’s not at all story driven.
So i’m making a second version and see if that turns out well!
Heterotopia cinema photos
Here are some photos we took of the finished model.
As you can see we used certain lighting to accentuate some parts of it while using a small plasticine figure.
The overall look of the model didn’t come out as well as expected, but we managed to get something out of it. But it’s not terrible either, so i won’t complain!
My part in the model making was the entrance and I glued some things down, like the walls. I also suggested the cinema idea!Â
My group did really well too, so props to them
Cinema heterotopia
Here are a couple of images that represent our project idea.
the model is going to be quite big and spacious. Our aim is to make an entrance, a snack station , tables and stools, toilets, ticket booth and at least 2 cinema rooms, all tied up in big walls and long hallways.
For the actual model we are using cardboard of different thicknesses, blue tack and glue gun glue. We mistakenly used blue tack to connect the walls which lead to total destruction.
Later on we will take photos of the finished model and make a storyboard based on what we have done.Â
Project 1: Heterotopia
For what I’ve understood from heterotopia is a world within a world, a somewhat disturbing yet familiar space as the definition goes. The prefix ¨hetero¨ means ¨other¨, so clue is in the title.
For example heterotopias can be bars, prisons, shopping centres, just spaces that have some odd element to them.
The concept was originally elaborated by philosopher Michel Foucault between 1966-67. According to Foucault a heterotopia is like a mirror, not quite a utopia, a spaceless space, so its in between whats real and what is unreal.
So coming back to our project, our task was to work on a heterotopia space within the groups we were given. We discussed ideas and suggested what spaces to use. The options we came up with were: An arcade, an aquarium, an abandoned factory, Area 51, a cinema, a hospital, a football pitch, a car park, a cathedral, Metroland (a mini park in the metrocentre), Fenwicks (depart. store), a prison cell and a graveyard. So a lot of options there!
We eventually stuck with one which is a cinema.
Next was planning our model, which took a lot of planning but we eventually managed to get a decent blueprint, almost like arquitecture, thanks to a member in our group who took the time to do so.
Unfortunately I’m lacking progress shots so I’ll update this post as soon as i find some
I present to you my homework! Please excuse my untidiness and crinkled paper, my bad.Â
Our task was to make a composition of squares depending on the words that were given to us. These words were : ORDER, INCREASE, BOLD, CONGESTED, TENSION and PLAYFULÂ
The 6 small squares above were to make thumbnails of the ideas we had for each word with the squares which helped us organise our ideas to then draw it on the bigger squares as our final idea. This method helped us understand that the first idea is not always the best idea, therefor letting us think about it before we decide to make our final decision.
Another thing that i understood from this task was that since we were given such a basic shape to work with, we had to find a way to express each words using minimal elements. I believe it is important to learn how to use that concept in animation in order to be able to express the right ideas and movements in our future projects.Â
A good start!
Hello everyone!
This is where im going to be blogging my progress and projects from my animation degree course!
