The bass thumped hard enough to rattle the floor, a constant pulse beneath their feet that made it feel like the whole world was breathing in time with the beat. Or maybe just them. The nightclub they found themselves in, was all velvet shadows and flashing lights, packed wall to wall with strangers chasing after whatever fleeting thrills Vegas promised. Somewhere between their second round of shots and a drink Sonny ordered purely because it came with a flaming garnish, theyâd ditched their inhibitions and hit the dance floor.
Now, a little sweat-slick and hair tousled, Sonny finds herself slouching into a plush booth near the edge of the crowd, one boot propped on the edge of a low table, her drink swaying slightly in her grasp. Her skin is even glowing under the neon lights, her eyeliner still mostly intactâ which was a miracle in and of itself. Holly, of course, sits beside her, cheeks just as flushed, eyes bright from both the dancing and the liquor she's sure, while Sonny canât stop the grin that tugs at her lips while she looks at her.
âOkay,â Sonny crests, dragging the word out lazily, her voice thick with booze and warmth, âso Iâve danced with three people whose names Iâll never remember, drank something that tasted like cherry cough syrup and regret, and I'm pretty sure that guy near the bar proposed to me? Or perhaps, he just wanted to sell me a timeshare. Either way it's unclear. Both the details surrounding it and whether or not I should've said yes. You know, just for the chaos.â She lifts her glass in a lazy, high toast. âVegas is definitely delivering.â
After taking another sip of her drink, she turns her attention to Holly, expression shifting into something a little more focused, and a whole lot softer. The music still pulses behind them, but in this little bubble of flickering light and too-loud laughter, it feels distant in comparison.
âNo but seriously,â she adds, nudging Holly gently with her elbow, âyouâre gonna have to give me more than vague smiles and mysterious vet school tension. I want a full catch-up. Whatâs really been going on with you lately?â Her tone isnât sharp, or pryingâjust curious in that way people get when they havenât realized how much theyâve missed someone until theyâre suddenly sitting right beside them again. "I want to know everything. What's that they say? About spilling the tea..."
Sonny tilts her head with a laugh, narrowing one eye as if assessing Holly through the haze of tipsiness. âAre you seeing anyone?â she presses, a bit bluntly but not pushy. âBecause you know, you're far too gorgeous not to be and we'll have to rectify that situation immediately, if so. Maybe with someone here.... I can totally help you scope your options out. What happens in Vegasââ stays in Vegas.
Sonny then, reaches for a tray of half-melted ice and citrus slices and plucks out a lime from the bowl, pressing one piece to her mouth with very little flinch, as if it were a dare. Her next words, when they come, are quieter, more serious despite the grin still tugging at her lips. âI just⊠I don't know... I want to know where youâre at, Hols. Not the glossed-over version you feed to strangers or family members to get them off your back, who quite honestly, shouldn't be involved in your business anyway. You know... the real stuff. You donât have to pretty it up for meâI already know lifeâs a mess. Just wanna know what pieces of it youâre carrying. And if I can help you shoulder any of it.â The music swells again as a new song drops, vibrating the booth beneath them, but Sonny doesnât even glance toward the dance floor. She just looks at Hollyâwaiting and ready for whatever comes out of her mouth next.
