Newly-named Holmes Community College President Dr. Jim Haffey had one thing to be evident in his interview, his love for the institution where he, his wife and many of his family members attended.

Despite 11 years in many leadership roles at the institution, Dr. Haffey felt it was most important to express his love and admiration for the college, which gave him his start in higher education.

Jackson resident Elizabeth Evans is an elementary education major on the Ridgeland Campus of Holmes Community College.

As a freshman at Holmes, she was a member of Phi Theta Kappa. She has appeared on both the President's and Dean's Lists while at Holmes. Her sophomore year, Evans served on the officer team with the Alpha Lambda Sigma Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa on the Ridgeland Campus and was named to the All-Mississippi Academic Team this semester and was second team. Her Phi Theta Kappa Officer Team was recognized as distinguished teams both in the Mississippi/Louisiana Region and by Phi Theta Kappa International during its annual meeting in Orlando, Fla. at the end of April.

Evans serves as a third grade Sunday School teacher at Colonial Heights Baptist Church.

Gary, Indiana native Samantha Stewart of Sallis is a cosmetology major on the Goodman Campus of Holmes Community College. Stewart, a 2005 graduate of Piney Woods School, graduated from Jackson State University with a degree in journalism in 2009. She worked two years in the field at T-Mobile and JP Morgan Chase before realizing that her real passion was in cosmetology. She returned to school at Holmes Community College to pursue her degree in cosmetology in August 2013. At Holmes, Stewart has been on the President's List. She also has been a member of Dr. Glenn F. Boyce's President Leadership Institute and serves as parliamentarian with SkillsUSA. Stewart serves as a preschool Sunday School teacher at Tipton Street Church of Christ in Kosciusko. Upon completion of her degree, her ultimate goal is to become an entrepreneur and to specialize in designing natural hair.

Holmes Community College's 2014 Sports Hall of Fame Banquet was be held Thursday, April 24 at 6:30 p.m. in Frank Branch Coliseum on the Goodman Campus.

The 2014 inductees are: Chris Avery, football; Laura Coleman Canard, women’s basketball; Richard Chisolm, football; Sherwood Colette, baseball; Terry Day, football; Michael Jones, baseball; W.A. Miles, women’s basketball coach; and Clint Tompkins, football.
