it  was  one  of  her  first  nights  off  in  a  while,  and  in  true  mila  maddox  fashion  she  had  to  spend  it  outside  the  comfort  of  her  home,  preferably  in  a  dark  place  like  a  club.  so  there  she  was,  about  two  drinks  and  one  shot  deep,  enjoying  her  night  off  with  some  friends  from  her  dance  team.  throughout  the  night  her  friends  disappeared  –  some  with  a  distraction  in  the  form  of  a  hookup,  and  others  simply  couldn't  be  bothered  with  staying  at  the  club.  yet,  it  was  her  and  another  friend  that  were  the  last  ones  standing.  a  glass  of  a  lychee  martini  in  her  hand  as  she  waited  by  the  bar  for  the  friend  to  come  back  from  the  bathroom  when  she  heard  the  rather  familiar  voice.  the  corners  of  her  lips  turned  to  a  slight  smirk  as  she  picked  up  her  gaze,  her  eyes  meeting  his  in  an  instance.  “  i  must  say,  ”  she  pauses  as  she  takes  a  sip  of  her  drink.  “  i  am  usually  greeted  with  far  more  interest.  i  might  end  up  thinking  seeing  me  is  a  bad  thing.  ”  which  she  knew  it  wasn't.  there  wasn't  a  single  bone  in  her  body  that  would  want  to  ignore  nix  right  now.

he  watches  her  smirk  appear  like  he  expected  it,  dark  gaze  settling  on  her  while  the  music  rattles  through  the  room  around  them.  for  a  second,  he  doesn't  answer,  just  takes  in  the  familiar  shape  of  the  moment;  the  drink  in  her  hand,  the  tilt  of  her  chin,  the  quiet  confidence  in  the  way  she  looks  at  him  like  she  already  knows  exactly  how  this  usually  ends.  " bad  thing ?  "  he  repeats  under his breath,  english accent musing, "  maddox,  if  seeing  you  was  a  bad  thing,  i'd  have  learned  by  now  to  leave  the  second  you  walked  in.  "  he  shifts  his  weight  slightly,  leaning  one  elbow  against  the  bar  beside  her,  posture  easy.  his  eyes  flick  briefly  to  the  drink  in  her  hand  before  lifting  back  to  her  face  again,  "  and  yet  here  we  are  again.  "  brow  lifts  just  slightly.  "  which  usually  means  one  of  two  things; either  you've  had  a  couple  drinks  already …  or  i  have.  "  a  glance  back  to  the  glass,  expression  somewhat amused.  "  judging  by,  presumably,  that  lychee  martini  in  your  hand,  i'm  guessing  you  got  a  head  start  tonight.  "

arden  is  outside on the  balcony  when  daria  walks  in,  socked  feet  standing on their toes while  they  lean  precariously  over  the  railing  like  they're  trying  to  inspect  something  three  floors  down.  they  glance  back  immediately  when  they  hear  the  door  open,  the  human  embodiment  of  an  exclamation  point.  "  oh  good,  you're  here !  so  first  of  all,  i  think  one  of  your  plants  might  be  having  some  kind  of  crisis  because  it's  smelling  a  little  weird out here,  but  more  importantly,  "  arden  leans  closer  to  the  railing  again,  squinting.  "  there's  been  a  pigeon  sitting  on  the  fire  escape  for  like  twenty  minutes  and  i'm  trying  to  figure  out  if  he  lives  here  now.  "

rain  starts  to  come  down  in  that  annoyingly  steady  kind  of  drizzle  that  convinces  half  of  manhattan  that  they  suddenly  need  a  cab  at  the  exact  same  time.  phoenix  had  been  standing  on  the  curb  for  long  enough  that  the  cigarette  in  his  hand  had  burned  itself  out,  shoulders  hunched  slightly  while  he  scanned  the  street  for  the  number  on  the  taxi  he'd  ordered.  when  it  finally  pulls  up,  he  slides  into  the  backseat  without  much  ceremony,  already  fishing  his  phone  out  of  his  pocket. the  door  opens  again  before  he's  even  able  to  open  his  home  screen,  and  he  barely  glances  up  at  first,  assuming  it's  just  another  passenger  the  driver's  decided  to  scoop  up  along  the  way.  then  the  voice  hits,  familiar  enough  to  make  his  eyes  lift  properly.  there's  a  brief  pause  as  recognition  settles  in.  " right, "  they  mutter  after  a  second,  leaning  back  against  the  seat  with  a  faint,  tired  exhale,  " because  of  course  that's  how  tonight's  going. "  the  musician  looks  sideways  towards  laurie  for  a  moment  before  focusing  back  on  the  rain  streaking  down  the  window.  " you  can  still  bail  if  you  want, "  they  add  lightly.  " won't  take  it  personally. "

arden  is  fiddling  with  a  piece  of  tape,  legs  sprawled  in  front  of  them,  when  mila  walks  in,  and  they  immediately  light  up  like  someone  just  hit  a  switch  on  their  brain.  " oh  hey, "  arden  says  easily,  pushing  a  loose  curl  out  of  their  face  as  they  stand  up.  " perfect  timing  actually !  i'm  trying  to  figure  out  if  this  idea  is  brilliant  or  completely  stupid. "  they  gesture  vaguely  toward  the  floor  where  strips  of  tape  form  an  uneven  spiral  pattern.  " the  plan  is  that  people  walk  through  it  and  the  lights  react  to  where  they  step,  but  i  realized  halfway  through  that  normal  people  walk  boring. "  then,  bright  with  sudden  inspiration,  " but  you  don't.  dancer  brain. "  a  grin  spreads  across  their  face  as  they  point  directly  at  mila,  " so  like…  would  you  mind  stepping  on  my  floor  for  a  second? "

late  morning  light  spills  through  the  studio  windows,  catching  the  mirrors  and  the  faint  scuffs  in  the  wooden  floor  while  logan  lingers  on  their  mat  a  little  longer  than  necessary.  pilates  had  originally  just  been  an  attempt  to  convince  herself  she  had  her  life  together,  but  somewhere  along  the  way  it  had  also  become  a  reason  to  talk  to  mila  afterward.  now  she  sits  cross - legged  with  a  water  bottle  balanced  between  her  hands,  watching  mila  gather  her  things  with  the  kind  of  graceful  ease  that logan  has  always  quietly  admired.  focus  shifts  to  the  worn  ballet  shoes  near  mila's  bag  before  lifting  again,  a  small  smile  tugging  at  her  mouth.  " i  dunno  how  you  do  it, "  english accent muses lightly.  " the  discipline  part.  making  everything  look  effortless. "  she  tilts  her  head  a  little.  " i  rehearse  how  to  walk  into  meetings  and  still  manage  to  trip  over  nothing. "

the  bar  is  loud  enough  that  conversation  feels  optional,  which  suits  nix  more than  fine.  he's  halfway  through  a  drink  he  doesn't  really  want,  leaning  against  the  bar,  and  watching  the  room  with  the  kind  of  detached  patience  that  comes  from  too  many  nights  exactly  like  this.  then  he  spots  her;  that  unmistakable  delicate  posture  that  looks  almost  out  of  place  in  a  place  that  smells  like  cheap  whiskey.  of  course.  the  corner  of  his  mouth  twitches  faintly  as  he  pushes  off  the  bar,  glass  abandoned  behind  him  while  he  drifts  a  little  closer,  dark  eyes  settling  on  her  like  this  was  always  the  inevitable  outcome  of  the  night.  " maddox, "  he  says  after  a  beat,  voice  low  with  dry  amusement,  " at  some  point,  you'd  think  we'd  figure  out  how  to  avoid  this  happening. "  not  that  he  wanted  to.
