Anon, I fear I semi agree with you. Because on one hand, he does definitely need to stand up to his parents, and I do think that’s where his arc is headed. I think he’ll pass his LSATS, Bryson will make good on his threat, his family will—yet again—not take his side, and Jeremy will kinda realize that they never will? Or something along those lines anyway. Basically, point being, he does need to stand up to them and choose himself, but I don’t think it’s so cut and dry for him just yet.
Sure, he’s 22, but at what age do you stop being someone’s child? Someone’s son? And Sure, his parents suck, but they don’t suck in the ways we’ve seen other characters’ parents suck and I think that’s an important juxtaposition. Up until now we’ve had main characters whose villains could be classified as villains immediately, including their parents. Neil’s father was a serial killer, Jean’s sold him to the mafia, the twins’ mother left one of them in foster care and then abused and got the other addicted to drugs. And then here comes Jeremy, whose parents have not really done any of that. (I’m not sure about Warren, because there’s implications, but Jeremy doesn’t seem to count him anyway).
I also think Jeremy’s more…tender hearted than the others ? Like sure, the characters all have soft spots and we get a line about Jean’s kind heart, but they know evil in a way Jeremy does not. And wouldn’t, because he didn’t grow up like that. He grew up cared for, and in a big house, and with his parents. And yet, still, he never once heard an I love you. And he didn’t understand why. And maybe the others didn’t either, but I think they kind of reasoned ethat their parents not showing them love and affection was not because of them. Whereas Jeremy questioned it, and then kept getting handed reasons of why the lack of love was his fault. He was gay , he did coke, he “killed” his brother, he doesn’t follow the path they want for him.
So now it’s less, this is my parents fault, and more this is my fault and if I could just do x then they’ll love me. And sure, you could wonder why he keeps trying, when, like Jean says, it’s been four years with no results, but Jeremy’s spent 22 years trying to get love. That’s a long time. And to lose all hope when he does seem to be an optimistic character, about something so big as his mother’s/family’s love, that he craves so very much, and blamed himself for for so long… well, I don’t think it’s so easy just yet.
And as far as the papers, I mean I too have wondered why he just doesn’t get them another way. But for rn , I think he’s still holding out hope that he can redeem himself and get his mother to give them back/trust him again. And I think they’re sort of symbolic in that way , too. A physical symbol of his mother’s trust/ love. He searched the whole house top to bottom in a desperate bid to find them, just like he’s trying everything and anything to try and win her love and affection back. But once he leaves, I imagine he’ll get new ones, and in doing so, leave the trust and love of his mother behind in trade for the love and trust of his real family —Jean and cat and Laila and jab
