Interest Check 2: The Sequel
Well gang, we’ve got some news.
We have run into an issue that we did not anticipate. With the results of the first interest poll, we seem to have far more Artists than we do Authors, and even with the possibility of last minute stragglers or volunteers, we just can’t seem to make the math work. Without more even numbers, we run the risk of participants not getting claimed, and we can’t in good conscience start an event knowing that someone will inevitably be left out. So, we sent up the bat signal and got the team together to commune with the fandom ancestors, and we’ve decided that we’re going to try this one more time with a minor change.
For the sake of data collection, we want to poll interest between just Artists and Authors. To our multi-class participants, please do not fret just yet. We know there are several of you that like to pull double-duty, and nothing has been decided at this point whether that will continue to be an option for this season. But as it stands with the numbers the way they are, we have to consider all of our options and make the most informed decision possible on whether we can responsibly proceed with the event.
Now, once more with feeling.
You in?
I’m interested in being an Artist
I’m interested in being an Author
There’s only one week left, folks!
I hope you’re all ready, and I can’t wait to see what wonderful creations there will be this time. 😄
Ngl if you want a character who is thoroughly subversive of genre conventions that's gotta be Soul. The other main characters are pretty straightforward, Black Star is just your typical shounen martial arts story (just watch The Boy and the Beast, aka the Classic Shounen Conventions: The Movie, and tell me Black Star doesn't belong in that kinda setting), Kid's arc felt like those royal chosen ones story where the young prince and heir to the throne slowly uncovers his dynasty's awful truth and conspiracies and promises to be better, Maka's arc felt like a female isekai or modern shoujo coming of age story (so there's a little bit of shounen genre subversion but it works into the whole classic power of friendship theme) where after a troubled home life she found the perfect support system where everyone loved her for who she is no matter what and she can always rely on them for anything.
Meanwhile for shounen MC, Soul barely aurafarms, his strength is through his wits and working from the shadows as a support to others, there's also how the Power of Friendship is showcased through him in a pretty unusual way: in other shounens 'The Power of Friendship' typically just acts as a random powerboost that the already heaviest hitter main character gets in a pinch, technically making the theme of teamwork hypocritical when in the end it's 1v1 between MC and the enemy anyway. While Soul is literally a character who cannot function unless someone (who needs to wield him) and a group of people (whom he empowers and synchronize using his music) work with him. His personality is closer to that of a Byronic Hero than a shounen hero, defined by his cynicism and seeming incapability to hope normally (I suppose this type of character is more common in the Light Novel genre) and his arc is more psychological horror where he just tries to keep his head above water by quickly trying to find the will to live by appreciating the little things in life (more common in seinen works) rather than becoming a master or other gaining those fancy titles and statuses.
More Soul Eater
Happy birthday to @holydrakes! And a small commemoration to Weaver for being almost unanimously voted most likely variant to survive the Tumblr Sexyman Awards.
You will all make for very esteemed guests…
Once again exploding Snippet Sunday with my mind as I have now completed my gift to @murkymuse for the SoMa Summer Exchange event!
Come on down for some underwater tomfoolery and poetic emotional constipation and Wes scheming in the background somewhere. And cahoots. All of these are related.
You can find it here on AO3, I need to sleep, lmao (please enjoy, though; I had a lot of fun even if it was a bit of a challenge getting started, haha)
Alrighty seems to be interest in a potential SoMa week for this year :D
When should SoMa Week be?
July 27th-August 2nd
August 3rd-9th
August 17th-23rd
(Skipping August 10th to 16th for SE Fam Week)
Also, if anyone has any prompt suggestions, feel free to comment them under this post/send an ask!
Voting for prompts will start within a week, so the last day to turn in an idea will be July 1st
In case anyone was interested lol, there’s also a SoMa server (18+ and NSFW friendly)
Check out the SoMa Cult community on Discord - hang out with 35 other members and enjoy free voice and text chat.
🚨Update🚨
The official SoulxMaka Week tumblr will be hosting the event this year!! Look out for any updates on their account
Apparrently the invite link expired on last rb lol this one still works
People losing their minds over top vs bottom discourses where technically either positions could function to explore different scenarios so it doesn't really matter.
Meanwhile I'm losing my mind that the popular somacro dynamic is passive victim Crona, prissy Maka, and dumb thirdwheel Soul. Which deadlocked the three into a stagnant dynamic that only serves to ensure Crona got rewarded for the most minimum effort. Maka's character getting butchered for the sake of shallow girlbossery where she can never be wrong with anything ever, and Soul is only there for schadenfreude and artificial love triangle resentment that doesn't make sense (rather than getting jealous romantically shouldn't Soul feel like having his boundaries violated to have Maka force his would-be killer into his inner circle...which again adds to point 2 where the dynamic ultimately assassinates Maka's character) terrible all around dynamic arrangement that butchers everyone involved. No dignity for Crona, no sensitivity for Maka, no respect for Soul. And y'all ate this slop.
SoMaStar any day of the year.
Ngl I'm gonna go around telling people who think this kinda somacro dynamic is peak is a sissy (since it purposely puts Crona in a super comfortable position, perhaps because the shipper is projecting into them themselves)
If you want an actual banger somacro dynamic, address the fact that Crona is kinda not only morally fucked up, they kinda can't do shit themselves, address how Maka's 'reliable senpai' front is...well, a front and she is short fused for a reason, address the fact that Soul is a victim of Crona and the two needed reconciliation. This way the dynamic ensures everyone grows, not some mary sue ass fanfic
Happy SoMa Summer exchange to @memethebum!!!! I was so happy to get such an awesome member of the community and such a great bit of inspiration. I had so much fun writing this!
Title: My Lady, My Love
Rating: Explicit
Summary: Smithie Soul Evans and Dame Maka Albarn are known throughout town as two constantly at each other's throats. Behind closed doors, it's a very different matter all together…
Read it on AO3.
Me promoting myself on twt:
"I read the entirety of Soul Eater and overanalyzed it so you don't have to"
for @chichirichick 💙
Nick and Judy are just grown up soma who actually knows how to communicate their feelings a little bit better.
Nick is just Soul who is a tiny little bit more comfortable in expressing verbal affection and a little more self-aware, while Judy is just Maka without the anger and severe abandonment issues and slightly better emotional regulation.
Care for a dance?
"Soul is the most forgettable character"
To you. As someone who grew up with tvtropes and became overly familiar with character archetypes and tropes, he ended up being the character most rewarding to analyze since he kept subverting stuff and didn't feel like the main character at all at first glance. But he made a surprisingly cohesive thematic center, with lots of pivotal moments in the series being dependant on him being at the right place at the right time and making the correct choices.
Maka and Crona technically have these inner child manifestations, but Maka's was moreso representing herself before her innocence was lost (the child who still depends on and adores her father technically) the child is able to communicate with the grown up teenage Maka too. While Crona is just them seemingly never really growing up from that vulnerable stage all their life.
Meanwhile Soul is the odd one where instead of an inner child in his mental world, he got what looked like a middle aged man looking like a tiny imp in a suit, who communicates with him more like a business man. The teenage Soul (and to an extent Maka) is also made to wear formal outfits (Maka's dress is even kind of form-fitting and adult-looking) making them seem more like kids kinda being forced to grow up.
While Maka and Crona's shadow working seemed to be about them addressing their inner child wounds, Soul's shadow working is him actively negotiating with a pragmatic, sleazy, adult version of himself.
That said the fact that ultimately Soul realized that what he craved the most is basic emotional security (that his music is capable to be loved as is as affirmed by Maka's unconditional love to his avant garde music) and meaningful connections (how it took him the entire series to realize he could use his music as a self-expressing art form and form connections with it) does imply a childhood depraved of affection. Yet we never really got to see any 'inner child' representation in him. (The closest thing is probably his piano being openly called 'sweetheart' by him at some point. Since Soul spent of the series avoiding it yet peaked his arc by declaring his love to it)
