“Do you mean they’re going to rob a bank?!” His tone was hushed. He internally questioned this child’s perception of what was ‘much’, staring incredulously at him. It was a moment before he tore his gaze away to briefly glance at the men who were crowded round in discussion. “What else did they say?” He whispered urgently.
“Uh-huh! I think so.”
Greg nodded casually at the other before redirecting his attention to the goons. “I think they said something about the marble bank on the corner at 3 o’clock.” It was something like that.. Suddenly Greg had a very delayed realization. “Are you a cop? Does that mean you’re gonna bust em?!” He spoke excitedly in a hushed tone, always having wanted to see some cop action in real life.. None of that fake TV lame-o stuff.

“I like candy pants better too!”
{ beast }
Hiding from the Beast? What an amusing thought, especially how Greg remarked it in such a way, as if he felt up to being an on-call babysitter. He can trick children but he most certainty couldn’t keep up with them, nor did he particularly care to.
With the boy’s upfront mannerisms it appears as if he were oblivious to the changes unto him, that nothing has effected him in the least other curiosity as to where his brother went. However, the creature knew otherwise —— his antlers were already in the process of growth, a sign amongst others that distressed feelings were indeed getting to him.
❝ Your arms will get tired. ❞ the Beast repeated back, his answer in a most unhappy tone.
❝ DON’T you know child, that your brother gave you a purpose ?? You are to harvest souls, keep the lantern LIT for his sake. ❞
“Can’t you do it? I thought you liked holding the lantern!”
Greg questioned with a hint of skepticism to his voice. He wasn’t very fond of how quickly the Beast’s tone changed, it was a little frightening and it certainly threw him off a little bit, but not nearly enough for him to break to his will.
The child huffed, kicking the snow underneath his feet before glancing around at the scattered objects.. He still had to find out what exactly had happened, nothing seemed to make any sense anymore.. Not like it had before, but now it concerned the boy directly, and he wanted to find out more. Where did everybody go? If only he had somebody he could trust to direct these questions to..
“Aw shoot, did he tell me to hold the lantern?” Tilting his head he looked up at the creature, perhaps if he was careful with his question, he could get a bit of information out of the source himself. “Harvesting souls doesn’t sound very nice, are you sure Wirt told me to do that?”

For the average person, being startled wasn’t a big deal. The quick shock to their system was followed by an exasperated sigh and a grumble, but that was it. Stanford had never been anything close to average, though. A life lived a breath away from horrendous pain and humiliation had kept the man running on his toes, his fight or flight response always ready to kick in and muscle memory itching to take over. It was something he was trying to get past, but not wholeheartedly. He was too much of a survivalist to just let that part of himself go. Even if he wanted to, he’d always cling to it on some level. Especially in a dark and dreary place like the one he’d found himself in.
Darkened woods weren’t enough to scare him, though. He’d spent many nights in them, and he’d been through things a hundred times worse. They were enough to put him on edge, though. Just enough so that when the young brunet made a sudden lunge towards him, the six fingered man didn’t immediately recognize that it was just a prank.
A gasp came from him, followed by the hasty rising of his boot to slam down and smash whatever had scurried in front of him. It was small and fast, but he could easily–
The sound of the round boy’s voice hit his ears and Stanford felt a wave of mixed relief, irritation, and embarrassment wash over him. His ears began to grow red and a six fingered hand reached down to grab the stem of the pumpkin and lift it off the boy’s shoulders.
“Boy! Didn’t your parents ever teach you not to bother strangers?!”
Thankfully, the stranger was quick enough to realize Greg was not a threat (or strange creature) of any kind, but instead a regular kid with nothing but mischief on the noggin. It only disappointed the child a little bit when the pumpkin was pulled off his head and he was yelled at. I guess he should’ve seen it coming, maybe next time he’ll think twice about scaring someone in the middle of a forest.
“Nope! They only told me not to talk to strangers!”
He stated calmly before picking up his teapot from the ground and placing it neatly on his head. “But between you n’ me, I think that’s a bunch of boloney, I met a lotta strangers and they’re pretty neat people!” It appeared as though he was not phased by the adults yelling. He knew very well that adults (as well as grumpy brothers) get worked up about a whole lot of nothing very easily, and that he shouldn’t get upset about it. Or at least that’s what his philosophy was. “They never said nothing about bothering strangers, or jumping out from behind trees and scaring the socks off them!”
With this, Greg offered an amused smile before turning his back and looking through a few nearby shrubs. He wasn’t making fun of the man, but he was most certainly trying to have a bit of fun.. It just so happened that this person was the only one around when the little one was bored. Had it been anyone else, he would’ve done the same thing.. Perhaps it was fortunate he hadn’t attempted to scare someone that would’ve actually harmed him.

What better place to scare someone than at night in a eerily quiet forest where nobody is expecting it? Well.. Maybe they were expecting it.. But walking down the quiet pathway alone in the dark hopefully builds up enough tension to scare anyone!
With a pumpkin covering his head, Greg waited patiently for someone to come close. At first he expected Wirt, but that changed when a complete stranger approached. It was totally fine though, Greg was okay with scaring anyone!
When the stranger came close enough, the child jumped out from behind a tree.
“OOoOoh! I’m The headless elephant man! What are you doing in my forest?!”

Wirt and Greg from OTGW. I boarded a few episodes of this show last year and I love how it turned out.
After ‘Over the Garden Wall’ came out, there was a spate of people putting molasses on their potatoes and getting mad that it tasted dreadful. Greg lied to you. Greg lied to you all.
That’s because they were all using regular potatoes instead of white sweet potatoes. Which, when combined with molasses, tastes great.
BOOST.
spate
Do people not say ‘spate’ anymore?

“Oh.. Okay.”
He nodded a bit before turning his back and looking through a group of shrubs.
“I’m looking for my candy trail! I think someone ate it, so the Sheriff here and I are lookin’ for anyone sketchy ‘round these parts!”
