。・:*˚:✧。 HAPPY BIRTHDAY, XAVIER! 。・:*˚:✧。
a/n: Finally, an upload!! ( ;´꒳`;) I REALLY wanted to write something for his birthday but life has been pretty stressful lately and whatever I tried to finish, never made the cut, so here is a very rough draft I will most likely edit later-
Inspired by this beautiful drawing and comic by @homaremikage
“...and your name, please?”
“huh?”, you look up in fluster from your phone, turn your head left and right before looking back up to the person in front of you again. You point your finger towards yourself, “a-are you talking to me?”
The barista chuckles, hiding his laugh behind the back of his hand, “I don’t think there’s someone else here in this cafe that ordered an iced shaken espresso on this rather cold October morning but you, so yes, I am.”
You feel your face grow warm, an awkward giggle making its way past your lips, “...that’s true”, you mutter, slightly embarrassed, “it looked delicious though and I simply saw the word ‘cinnamon’ on the menu, so I couldn’t not choose it.”
He giggles and it’s only now that you notice how good looking the barista in front of you is. Your heart rate increases by a tenfold (it doesn’t really - that would probably not be good given your medical record). You try your hardest to contain letting out a squeak.
“Very true.”, he says and flashes you a smile, “So? Can I get your name, please?”
You manage to stutter it out, but not without him asking you to repeat yourself once, so you opt to spell it out letter by letter instead. When he gets it done, he gives you another jaw dropping smile, “It’ll be done in a minute. Do you want to have it here or take it to-go?”
“I’m waiting for a friend, so, uh, I’m having it here.”, you respond, turn on your heels and walk to the first free table you can spot after he tells you he’ll bring it over to you when it’s finished.
Once seated, you immediately text Tara what can only be described as ‘pressing on every letter on your phone keyboard available without looking’ before you are finally able to say ‘PLEASE COME QUICKLY’ to which she replies with a worried ‘WHATS WRONG??’
You let out a loud exhale in distress; loud enough that you hear the barista giggle under his breath as your seat is only a couple of meters away from him. How embarrassing.
You try hiding your face with your phone, as you type: ‘HANDSOME GUY AT COFFEE SHOP’ to her in a hurry, making a bunch of unnecessary typos while you are at it. Tara asks if you can take a secret picture and you simply reply with a lot of question marks. She texts you she’ll be there in two minutes, that she really wants to see him and you put your phone down, trying to find your composure again before she arrives.
She is your best friend, sure, but this is probably one of the first times you have felt this conscious of another guy before. He is handsome, attractive and has a cute smile - what is there not to like about him? And he makes coffee; the one thing you are pretty much addicted to since you started university
When Tara suggested having coffee at a new place, you had been hesitant at first. For one, you loved the convenience of your usual place, which was only a three minute walk from campus. And secondly, you really - REALLY - hated the name system at coffee shops, which your usual coffee place never does when taking your order.
Which is great. Your name always gets confused one way or another and there are probably more instances of wrong names than your actual one. And you usually just stop correcting them at some point, when the line is long and you have repeated yourself the fourth time now.
So, yes, you were a little bit grumpy when Tara sent that link to the coffee shop which was fifteen minutes away from campus. The reviews were great, sure, but why would you bother when your perfect cup of a cappuccino was right in front of you already?
Well, this silver haired guy over there may just be a reason now.
Tara rushes in just when you start looking for your phone again to distract yourself. Her cheeks are slightly flushed from running and the moment she walks in, instead of looking for you, her eyes immediately fixate on the barista behind the counter. She then turns to you, the biggest grin on her face you have ever seen, before walking up to make her own order
You stare at them from the side, confused why they somehow look acquainted with one another as Tara tells him something and he laughs in response. You don’t remember her ever saying something about him, like ever. And why were you getting weirdly annoyed about it now?
When she returns, she is back to smirking at you again. She sits down, musters you and then says: “..so, the barista, huh?”
“You know him?”, you ask, leaning forward on the table to whisper so he cannot ever hear, “Since when? What is his name? Are you two friends?”
She laughs, holding her hands up in the air, “Hey, hey, calm down with the questions! Alright, so-”
But before she can continue talking, you hear footsteps walking closer until a cup of coffee is placed in front of you. You feel your ears turning warm already.
“Here you go, your iced shaken espresso”, his soft voice tells you and you shyly look up and give him a nod as a thank you. It’s weird how you feel like you could get lost in his eyes. Those blue, ocean-like irides that feel weirdly calm and relaxing and-
“The frappuccino will take a little bit longer, but I’ll get it ready as soon as possible. You guys are lucky - we usually are a little bit crowded around this time, but today it's quite calm."
“I have been wanting to check this place out for a while, so that's great! It’s so cozy here and we desperately needed a change of pace from the usual.”, Tara responds, as you go and take a sip to avoid having to join the conversation.
“Soooo, Xavier, are you dating someone right now?”
As if on cue, you start choking on your drink, resulting in a violent cough. Tara bursts out laughing next to you, then goes to pat you on the back in an attempt to help you through the fit, which doesn't really help that much.
Who you now know to be ‘Xavier’ looks at you with concern in his eyes; then he jogs back to the counter and returns with a glass of water, handing it to you. You don’t know how red your face is when you finally feel like you are able to breathe again, glaring daggers at Tara who is still giggling and trying to hide it behind her hands.
“...I’m not, Tara.”, Xavier answers, surprisingly honest, and you almost feel yourself choking once more, “Not sure why you are asking though”, he adds quietly. You feel his eyes on you, but only for a second.
“Oh, just for a friend.”, she responds and if your glares weren’t threatening yet, they surely were now.
Maybe he’s just good at reading the room, or maybe he really doesn’t know, but Xavier doesn’t ask anything else. He heads back to finish Tara’s drink and you take that time to scold Tara to never do something like that again. She simply raises her eyebrow at you and tells you that if she didn’t ask, you would have never done anything to change about it.
“And Xavier is a great guy! I have some of my classes with him. He is smart, diligent and kind - just the type of guy you'd like.”
“...Is that why you asked me to come here?”
“...maybeee….”
You sigh.
“Don’t sigh at me! You have been sending me all these clips of couples on social media recently and I think that was you subconsciously telling me something. So, here you go!”
“Nope, I can’t. He’s way out of my league!”
Tara gasps, “no way, what are you saying? You are beautiful and gorgeous. He is missing out big time, if he doesn't take that chance.” She has her arms crossed in front of her chest, shaking her head. You sigh and take another sip of your coffee before trying to change topics.
When Xavier arrives with her drink a little bit later, you try your hardest not to stare at him too much. You really did. But then he sets down a plate with two chocolate cookies on the table as well that you are sure neither of you ordered and so you look at him, only to almost lose your breath when he looks visibly flustered.
“These are.. from me.”, he mutters, followed up by a very quiet excuse of “made too much” that you are now 100% sure he was lying about, because his ears were colored pink and you have literally never heard of an establishment giving out pastries like that before.
“Thank you, Xavier”, you respond shyly.
Tara has the biggest grin on her face, her eyebrows raised high when she seemingly spots something you haven’t seen yet. Xavier smiles and returns back behind the counter and you give Tara a confused head tilt. Why does she look so smug?
Without saying a word, she taps at the napkin in front of you that was sitting under the plate.
You let out a silent scream. Internally.
On the napkin, written with a sharpie you spot a phone number, the message ‘I’d like to get to know you more’ underneath it with a smiley.
Tara props her chin on her hands, “...what did I tell you?”
