The First Step to Credit Improvement
Step 1, look at it.
Sounds pretty basic right? In order to improve anything intentionally, you have to take a good hard look. But youâd be surprised at how the thought of looking into things terrifies many. Donât be a scardy cat! You can do this! It might not even be as bad as you think⊠I mean, it might be worse too, but⊠so what! Itâs fixable! Be brave and pull up that darn credit report and roll up your sleeves and get to looking!
Youâre going to want to pull from all three major credit agencies: Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. In fact, you can do this for free once a year through, AnnualCreditReport.com. Once you get these reports, comb through them to discover whatâs been taking your score up (like paying your bills on time or maintaining low balances on your credit cards) and the items thatâve brought it down (like missed payments and high balances). This is the juicy stuff.
If your bank offers free credit monitoring, take advantage of this service so that you can keep regular track of your credit for errors. Otherwise, you should track your credit through soft inquiries, so as not to further ding your score (Iâll dive more into hard and soft inquiries later).
From here, you have two more things to do. The first is to check for inaccuracies in your report and have them removed (contact all three agencies for this). The second is to pay down your revolving credit. Maybe skip on some of the luxuries in order to get some of that debt under control. Consider another gig for making a little additional income.
See it wasnât that hard. You got this!

Credit Shmedit!
Letâs be honest. Good credit is easier to achieve when your finances are already in order, but being cash-flow challenged doesnât necessarily have to mean that youâre doomed to bad credit. Nor does it mean that because you make good money that you automatically have great credit. Credit, can be a tricky thing (for various reasons) but hereâs a brief case for achieving good, or even excellent, credit.
It can save you thousands of dollars over the years
Folks with good credit arenât paying the high interest rates those with poor credit are. This is their reward for being âlow riskâ borrowers. Banks are more confident in these folks - that theyâre actually going to get their money back. It makes them feel a lot more⊠comfy.
It may not be a big deal if youâre financing a new bed, but when youâre financing a large item, like a car or a home, the savings can be monumental. Poor credit can affect you in ways you donât always think about as well. You might not be looking to buy a home but are looking to rent. You best believe your credit will be pulled here too. What about renting a car? Here too? Yes! Even if you feel youâre nowhere close to buying a house or bed - right now, I encourage you to begin working on your credit if itâs not exactly stellar. One day, you will want to finance something, and the clean-up of your credit that is done today will be your life raft when it comes to that big ticket item. Your future self will be so proud.
