Hello! My biggest dream is to become an arborist (tree surgeon!) and I was wondering if you had any tips or advice for beginners in the field? I have zero experience, and outside of getting a degree that aligns with the field, I have no real idea where to begin! What kind of internships should I be looking for? Any advice would be indescribably appreciated. Also I think you’re really cool!
Heya! So it really depends on where you live. If you’re in the states, I know arboriculture and entering the field is a fair bit different there as it’s more of a trade. It’s not considered a trade in Canada. In my province I was able to take a one-off arborist course at the local university. The teacher ended up hiring me on with her company! You don’t actually need any degrees to be hired on, but understanding tree science REALLY helps and gives you an advantage. (Again, this may be different in the states, I’m not sure.)
A tree-based education is also so valuable as you can properly educate the public and it really teaches you how to care deeply, and properly, for nature. You can maybe buy an ISA textbook online and start reading it and taking some notes in your spare time?
I’d suggest joining an arborist group on Facebook specific to your country/region and ask for tips there! The arb community has never been anything but kind and helpful in my experience. In the mean time, hit the gym and buff up to prepare! It‘s really hard on the body and protecting your bones with strong muscles is important 😊
Good luck on your entry into the tree world! The more the merrier 🌳♥️
