Race on Social Media
I think it is fascinating how one little hashtag can blow up such a big issue like race.I also found it incredibly interesting that “Black Twitter” exists. I guess I am so on the outside of the issue that I am unaware of the behind the scene movements. It’s crazy because I have seen the hashtag campaigns that they have started, but I never knew they were behind them. They are very effective and start a good conversation about the progression of race in this country. The fact that social media can actually lead to in person protests and dialog across the country says a lot about how far social media has come and how useful it can be in societal revolutions. Obviously the solution has to come offline, but getting the ball rolling and getting people to care enough to make other people work on a solution with them is truly inspiring and incredible.
I define Black Twitter as a temporally linked group of connectors that share culture, language and interest in specific issues and talking about specific topics with a black frame of reference.
