the more i hear about other peoples' experiences as high-functioning autistics, and the more i understand my own experiences as a high-functioning autistic, the more it's like.

Oh this is the equivalent of snorting cocaine to do really well as a stock broker in the 90s on Wall Street.

let's say you sell stock on Wall Street during the 90s and you're REALLY good at your job. you're competitive, competent, passionate. you are functioning in a high risk environment that requires your absolute most to maintain position.

you also have to snort lines in the morning to be able to do this without shutting down halfway thru the day.

and then you start to slow down anyway, so you have to start doing lines at noon to be able to keep up. and then that stops being enough to keep you from shutting down. you stop functioning as well, people start to notice and ask. you start to lose it. the physical toll starts to kick in, you're tired all the time, you're in pain, you're struggling with tasks you had no issue with before. people are disappointed, angry. they pity you and your failure to keep up. you've hit the absolute wall of what you're capable of doing because you've been systematically shredding your entire health and wellbeing to keep up with an environment that wasn't made to account for you.

that's what shutting off your nervous system to function in daily society feels like. which is what i do as a high‐functioning autistic person.

btw FedEx is dissolving its HR Dept company-wide. you should definitely worry about what it means for a leading Fortune 500 to get away with simply Not having HR readily available to its employees.

hate to be the bearer of bad news but if you like having labor laws and not working industrial revolution hours: you do in fact care abt HR. no they're not there for you. yes they are there so the company doesnt get sued for some fuckass manager breaking labor laws

listen i highly doubt i could convince you against what you feel, and i do feel for your coworker. but if your company isn't paying fairly and HR isnt doing anything, you're not powerless and dropping your own ball is a bummer. there's laws that you can 100% pull on.
