Luffy is hard to draw
Stuck on this idea that Buggy and Shanks had two very separate experiences growing up on the Oro Jackson, but not for the reasons they think.
Buggy grew up feeling teased as Roger's little jester boy, a hand-me-down for Shanks, who he thought would be the next Pirate King. Shanks was the favorite, Shanks got the attention; at least when Shanks was King, Buggy would have Shanks's attention at last, except Loguetown happened and suddenly Buggy wasn't even good enough to be Shanks's jester. He just wasn't good enough.
Meanwhile, Shanks grew up thinking the literal sun shone out of Buggy's ass. It didn't help that the rest of the crew kept giving Buggy praises that Buggy never heard because let's face it, he'd get a big head about it that Shanks felt compared to. Buggy had no qualms about stabbing someone. Buggy could climb the ratlines and rig up the sails as fast as a seasoned pirate. Buggy could pick out counterfeit gold and accurately guess a jewel's carat or cabochon at a glance. Buggy was immune to Conqueror's Haki and doesn't know. Buggy had the Devil's Luck, something most pirates would kill for.
Shanks felt he never had to worry about Buggy. Buggy's bounty staying 15,000,000 while he stays in the East Blue? Buggy must be lying in wait, biding his time. Buggy got sent to Impel Down? Poor Impel Down, Shanks pitied them. Buggy was there at Marineford? Shanks didn't expect him to show up so soon, wow! Buggy's a Warlord? Called it. Buggy's now a fellow Emperor? As expected of the Genius Jester! Buggy's working with Crocodile and Mihawk and not him? Goddamn it, he's gonna have to try harder to get on Buggy's level and get Buggy's attention.
The Roger Pirates that are still alive continue to chew at the bit over that damn near-40-years-bet over whether or not Shanks is going to finally confess. Crocus already lost since he bet it would happen before the boys turned 30.
Doylist answer: buggy and shanks look way younger in Oden's flashbacks, because this is an age retcon. Their own flashbacks were relatively early in the course of the manga and Oda had not fully decided when their 'cabin boy' period fell in their lives.
Watsonian answer: Shanks and Buggy perceived themselves in their flashbacks as far, far older than they actually were, as a result of being raised amidst a pirate war. Oden's recollection of them (as YOUNG children) is a jarring contrast to how Shanks and Buggy thought of themselves (as young ADULTS).
it's just fucked up to think when Shanks and Buggy were little Buggy would talk about his dreams and his goals and wanting be a BIG pirate with LOTS of treasure meanwhile Shanks was staring at him goo goo eyed like "can't wait to spend the rest of my life with him" WTFFFFFFFFFF!!!!!!!!!
Okay everyone, we talk a lot about Shanks fumbling Buggy in the Shuggy fandom but the fumble was mutual.
The more we know, the more i'm convinced Shanks would let Buggy be the captain. He would let Buggy go after the One piece even if he wanted it.
In another universe, Buggy is sailing around with a very whipped Shanks happily fulfilling his every whims (still teasing Buggy to death but the clown is in charge).
In this world, it's a litteral clown and the most overpowered golden retriever on the seas being very happy and probably very insufferable too.
Benn Beckman has a full grey head by thirty.
That's Kinda gay Shanks
There's plenty of fish in the sea, and all he wants is Finding Nemo.
@redhaired-redhearted
‘And he wants is Finding Nemo’ I CANT
Shanks is one of the funniest characters in media. Like he’s hyped up as one of the strongest and coolest character in the world. Then when you finally learn more about him and he’s like clinically depressed and wants to sail off into the sunset with a literal fucking clown. What a guy.
oh dear I'm thinking again about Shanks being told he has a destiny but it's NOT the One Piece by the man he looks up to above all others, and saw as his second family after finding out his birth family are evil slave-keeping monsters who basically rule the world.
I'm thinking about Buggy being told by the world and his own terrible self-esteem that he is just inherently lesser than Shanks, inferior, and crafting his entire bombastic, self-aggrandising personality in response because fuck that and fuck Shanks.
I'm thinking about Buggy at Loguetown, grieving and vulnerable, finally letting himself believe what he thinks is the truth - that Shanks was always meant to be his captain. Offering to sail under him to find the One Piece.
I'm thinking about Shanks, equally wracked with grief and horror, on top of knowing everything he knows about his family, being fucking horrified that his feisty little friend who NEVER lets anyone put him down would bow his head to Shanks.
some shuggy shenanigans
Some highlights from my One Piece birthday art stream! Thank you so much to everyone who attended, I had an amazing time ♥
Going back and reading the manga, the first meeting of a Luffy and Zoro will always be something that is funny but also a moment I treasure. Them meeting was the moment I knew they were ment for each other, Luffy refusing Zoro's refusal is really funny because Luffy just gained a best friend and a future partner by refusing him.
A king and his knight final boss
The way they understand each other without words, thats how you know they were designed to find eachother
"No Men", does that include yourself Sanji, my little egg?
I made this post a while back as a joke/bc i was surprised i hadnt seen anyone else come up with the idea. But the more i think of it the more it erases what i love about Zoro's Promise. So, new idea: all the straw hats are girls except for Zoro. Zoro does not give a shit about it. Frankly he didnt even notice until Nami demanded gendered bunk rooms. Tashigi still maintains that he wont kill her because she's a girl for the longest time and she feels so embarrassed when it gets out the straw hats, his fighting comrades, are all women.
Now the question is, is Sanji a lesbian that thinks all women should be treated like queens and her beef with Zoro is that Zoro doesnt do that. Or is Sanji unknowingly trans and beefs with Zoro for that same reason but also its mostly because Zoro is the only other man on board and thus his competition, which of course leads to Sanji rolling up post-timeskip informing Zoro that he's the only man on the crew now?
