There was no mistaking the identity of the pink haired young man in his usual lavish royal attire approaching her from the opposite end of the hall.
"It’s nice to see you looking so well cousin. Besides that little…incident involving your assistant, did you have a nice time in Sindria?" she pondered wanting to strike up some small conversation with him.
His face turns from optimistic neutrality to an almost bitter discomfort at the very sound of her voice -- and then, only more so at the topic of discussion. He ought to have known that his grand mishap with the Sindrian queen would not be far from the ears of those he had left behind at the Kou court, and he momentarily finds himself cursing Koubun underneath his breath. If it had not been for this eager plot, Kougyoku would not feel as though he had been caught butt-naked in front of the one cousin whom he's come to dislike.
He keeps his thoughts to himself, mostly, and for propriety's sake, he answers in the most pleasant way that he can muster.
"The weather was too hot for my liking." Lie. The warmth of Sindria is actually one of the few things Kougyoku had enjoyed; or, at least, he would have, if he had been allowed to dress less formally. Yet, a prince must wear his dignity as a heavy burden: only, Kougyoku hadn't realized that his tutors had meant this literally. "Yet the people seemed friendly and welcoming enough. Have you ever been to Sindria, cousin?"

"Welcome back, Prince Kougyoku." She said, bowing low to the prince with he hands clasped together. "I hope your riding trip with your brothers was enjoyable. I’ve gotten all your work done for today so you may relax for the rest of the day." She straightened up, offering the prince a warm smile. It sure was quiet without him around, it was much more enjoyable when she had something to do for him.
I've gotten all your work done for the day.
While this would normally make any prince ecstatic, it does chip at young Kougyoku's smile just enough to cause a visible shift in his expression, if only for a split-second. Does everyone thing me so useless, that they must bear my load for me? He thinks to himself, though shakes off the notion as quickly as it had come to him. No, he reminds himself, Koubun's just trying to help.
The dainty, reservedly joyful look is returned in earnest to his delicate features. It's the restrained smile that he and his family have been practicing for generations, and yet on Kougyoku, it only serves to make him appear more lady-like. But he tries not to think on it too much: if he did, his bitterness would grow and fester like a rotten sore.
"It was quite enjoyable, yes, though I may have pushed my own horse too far." Despite his looks, Kougyoku is the fiercely competitive type -- though, it tends to end more in clumsy disaster than victory. "But if there is truly nothing left for me to do today, then perhaps you would care to join me for some tea?"
hello, hello ~ so i've been away for a while and don't have any more drafts on this boy. if you'd like to thread, hit me up! c:
Ka Koubun had stopped in his tracks, frozen at his spot by the stern, strict voice of his master. The request was not only perplexing, but surprising. It was not of expectancy to hear such a request, yet neither was it expected for the prince to become pressed against his body, to become close enough, reach his height and press those brims against his own.
He’d expected for something to be wrong. For something out of place, a casualty that would evade whatever was to unfold now. Now that they spoke of the vetoed. But so came the prince, and sealed their lips without any hesitation at his expression. A brave act not even the assistant would have mustered up on his own. And as he felt his lips engulf in another, being stroked in the slightest, he froze, much more than before. Golden hues wide, heart stopped beating all at once. Panic shook his being, trembling were his limbs. What brought him back to reality was the closeness, the scent of his other merely centimeters away, right there, pressed against him.
This was all he’d desired. All he’d wished for in an instant. The prince, giving himself up to his loyal adviser without second thoughts, without remorse. Doing an act Ka Koubun would have never believed would come to be.
And so came the realization, along with the closing of his hues, the movement of his brims against the tenders of the prince. Digits reaching to pull the string that held his cap, having it fall from his top and proceeding to bind his fingers through burgundy tresses, those he would brush at times, yet now were all for his own.
There is something about the way that Koubun freezes up upon their first contact which Kougyoku does not like. It's confirmed when he feels Koubun tracing his fingers through the prince's long, exquisitely maintained hair, and it makes Kougyoku's carmine eyes dart off to the side in nervousness. He bites down on his lip, able to all too clearly feel the warmth, the affection coming from Koubun's touch.
It's not the sort of affection which an adviser should hold for his advised, and yet the same could have been said for that kiss which Kougyoku had stolen mere moments before. Yet the young prince maintains this difference: he's had lovers before and, though he had never taken another man to bed, he has his suspicions that the concept worked in the same fashion. And there is simply no room for any kind of tenderness in situations like these, lest one's heart be broken.
One day, Kougyoku will have to marry -- and it will not be to Koubun. The adviser will be forced to look on, and to watch as his prince takes greater strides into manhood, and perhaps later fatherhood. This sort of relationship could only be toxic to Koubun, and yet, here he is, willing to accept this for a brief interlude with the young prince.
And while Kougyoku would hate to admit it, the gentle heat of a hand stroking through his hair and the knowledge that there's someone out there who adores him are more comforting than he would care to admit. He finally brings his gaze back on Koubun, although the worrying thoughts are not entirely dispelled.
"You do know, Koubun," though he tries his best to sound authoritative, there's a softness to the prince's voice which makes it impossible to be fully commanding. It's his trusted adviser, after all: no matter how hard the young royal tries, Kougyoku can never be too harsh with him. "I ... do not harbor any greater feelings for you, than what a prince and his assistant should hold." Lie. Kougyoku's always been a terrible liar, yet even a bad lie told many times can easily be belied. "So if you are forcing your hand to be tender with me, it is for your benefit that you stop: I am only using you for my own needs."
