45. pulling the blanket over both of you without being asked. - @hopeforged

sloane   wasn’t   usually   fond   of   sharing.   growing  up  with  an  older  brother,   her  mother  used  to  tease  that  sloane  was  born  to  be  an  only  child,   but  then  again,   her  mother  used  to  tease  her  about  a  lot  of  things.   brows  furrow  together  for  a  moment  as  she  pushes  the  thoughts  away,   snapping  back  to  reality.   the  air  was  cold,   and  she  could  hear  the  wind  whipping  loudly  outside  of  the  room  they’d  barricaded  themselves  into.   she  couldn’t  see  outside,  but  if  she  had  to  guess,   she  wouldn’t  be  surprised  if  it  had  started  snowing.  winter  was  well  on  its  way.   if  they  didn’t  find  somewhere  safer  and  warmer  to  hunker  down  in  soon,   they  were  screwed.

clearing  her  throat  quietly,  she  readjusts  the  tattered  blanket  they’d  found,  pulling  half  of  it  over  herself  and  the  other  half  she  lifted  and  offered  to  ryland,  scooting  closer  to  him  out  of  sheer  desperation  for  the  warmth.

no amount of pacing back and forth seemed to warm him. the space was colder than he though it would be. which was stupid of him. the air outside was nearly bad enough to freeze their fingers off. of course the inside spaces that were lacking proper heating and power would feel nearly as bad. the concrete wasn't holding onto any amount of heat from any source and if they tried to start a fire in here, they would most likely die. for half a moment, ryland missed summer. it wasn't his favourite month with how suffocating the heat was these days but at least it was somewhat better. too cold to keep moving, he shifted to plop down next to her; brows creased together in slight worry.

the blanket she was offering him would do very little to help but he wasn't going to be an asshole. they could make it work. they could survive the coldest hours of the night. he shifted closer to her and allowed her to curl it around his shoulder. he slid his arm closest to her to curl it around her middle to pull her in further. they needed body heat as much as the blanket heat.

" thank you. " he kept his voice low; head tipped slightly towards her own. " we just need to make it through the night, yeah ? then we can find somewhere better. "
