Summary:
“Lady Bridgerton,” the Queen says, her voice carrying an air of command that slows the pace of the nearby onlookers. “I trust I will see your exquisite daughter at Lady Danbury’s ball tomorrow evening. It would be a shame for the season’s most brilliant gem to remain in its case for too long, would it not?” She raises her brow expectantly.
“Of course, Your Majesty,” Violet stammers, practically vibrating with pleasure. “We would be honored.”
“Excellent.” The Queen’s eyes flick to Francesca, the corner of her mouth lifting. “It is always a pleasure to see a plan come together.”
Her mother smiles broadly, hooking their arms together, and while her mother and the Queen continue with their idle formalities—Francesca’s gaze drifts.
A door at the far side of the royal carriage brigade, away from the Queen’s line of sight, opens silently and a figure slips out.
They pause, glancing back toward the Queen’s window for a moment before turning to inch away.
Their eyes lock.
A woman.
A woman in.. gentleman’s trousers?
