It's a good thing I'm one of those people that doesn't need lots of friends because it's true what they say about people ditching you when you become chronically ill.

My work friends checked in on me less and less when they realized I was going to keep answering "how are you?" the same way. When it became apparent I wasn't coming back to work, they stopped checking in entirely. Other friends stopped inviting me out after I had to say "no thank you" or cancel last minute too many times in a row. And it's hard to make new friends when I can't work or do sports or join hobby groups.

I still have a couple of friends and they're sticking by me and I've made a couple online friends, and I'm very grateful for them all. But it still hurts a bit to know that some people couldn't/wouldn't deal with me becoming chronically ill and disabled; I'm still me.
