Tbh when people interpret movie grace as alloro, i think thats a boring hc, but i dont really have a huge problem with it. Like, i can see how he doesnt come across as super aromantic in the movie. But when people interpret book grace as alloro, i think theyre just blinded by amatonormativity lol

People saying humans would colonize Erid is kinda funny to me cause, it took humanity trillions of dollars and years of ruining ecosystems to produce the ship and astrophage they needed to send a tiny ass spaceship with 3 astronauts on a one-way 12 lightyear trip. Good luck trying to produce the astrophage needed for a ship carrying a full army of people on a 16 lightyear trip lmao. All to colonize a planet thats not even remotely liveable for humans

I've seen a lot of people talking about how autistic-coded Grace is in the movie, but I have yet to see anybody mention how much deeper that autism runs in the book? Like the first two chapters are maybe like a page or two of Grace waking up and then the rest is just him calculating shit for no real reason.

Like he immediately is like "I need to figure out how much gravity I'm experiencing right now because it's really annoying me. Also I would like to know how big of a centrifuge I would have to be in in order to experience this level of gravity, and before you ask, yes, I showed my work. Let me explain, in way more detail than anyone could possibly want or need, my calculations." He literally admits he doesn't need to be doing all this math, he just really, really wants to.

And then when he tries to start communicating with Rocky, the first two things he brings are a clock and tape measure. So he can teach him about numbers. No hi, hello, how are you? I don't think they even got to 'yes' and 'no' before he pulled up trying to teach the alien how to count. This man is so obsessed with numbers, he cannot possibly conceive of an intelligent species that isn't just as obsessed with numbers.

#very relatable because one of the first things i did after reading the book was teach myself how to do base 10 to base 6 conversion #from memory #and now i just do that sometimes for fun when im bored

They just don’t understand each other’s grammar, so when they’re trying to communicate, Grace will literally say things like “no understand” or “astrophage on my star. Bad.” Admittedly, he does it less so than Rocky, but it’s established that Rocky’s better at learning and math and memory, so he learns English faster than Grace learns Eridian, and they both adapt to each other’s levels

ROCKY IS NOT STUPID!! PLEASE STOP depicting Rocky’s internal thoughts as the same ungrammatical speech just because it’s funny or cute. PLEASE I BEG OF YOU.

Grace and Stratts relationship in the book is so funny. Grace is just teasing the most powerful person in the world over her choice of astronauts, right in front of the entire science crew, and she just lets him. And he still wonders why people think he's the second in command.

#she drags him everywhere and makes him explain science to her and calls him an asshole in front of new people so i guess it goes both ways #project hail mary #stratt just endlessly handing grace new tasks without him noticing #no one told him hes the head of hr </3
