I met a Boerboel in person. Absolutely awestruck. Felt like a lion saw me. I’ve never been to a proper dog show, but this was a free “dog show” that had a healthy mix of respect and ambivalence toward breeds. However there was a disappointing demonstration of police Malinois. The dogs were not disappointing, the explanations given for the commitment and intensity of their training were—“lots of people ask us if the dogs like what they do or if we make them. Of course they like it, they get treats and toys!” No appreciation for universes of reference. For any creature this bothers me but it is especially silly given the cops were talking about MALINOIS who WORK. Reducing canine universes of valorization to rewards makes me queasy.
