The episcopal church in downtown Providence, RI, utilizes sloping walls, an iron fence and spikes to make sure that no one can sit or lie down, because that’s a really sweet thing to do to your fellow man. Kudos!
Places doing good things: Albuquerque, New Mexico. Working water fountains and a HAND WASHING STATION IN THE PARK! We all need these.
Albuquerque, New Mexico. UnHostile architecture. Wall around the church is made for people to freely sit, or lie down.
Camden bench designed for what you can’t do. 1. Can’t skate it 2. Can’t tag it 3. Can’t sleep on it 4. Can’t stash anything in it 5. Can’t drive through it ( used as a barrier) You can sit or lean on it with a backpack or bag behind your feet….. designed to be an anti item , hostile architecture.
New Hostile architecture just dropped at my local train station
I had to go into the city today to renew my transit card, and I notice SEPTA had removed all the seating inside the terminal and replaced the benches outside with these eyesores
Not only can you not lay down on them, I had a hard time "sitting" on them myself; imagine how hard it would be for disabled people to use these
I think hostile architecture is probably one of the worst human inventions. Maybe if we spent more time trying to house the homeless, we wouldn’t have to spend so much time and money trying to deter them from sleeping in public spaces.
But I guess some people would rather spend thousands of dollars to make their benches and sidewalks look ugly than care for their neighbors.
I’m glad I live in a village and we don’t have to deal with this kind of nonsense. I’d rather there be no benches or sidewalks at all than look at little monuments to cruelty every day.
Where: Berri-Uqam Subway station, Montreal, Canada How it’s hostile: Bars between the benches prevent people from lying down and prevent the benches from being used by families that want to sit together.
Damn, the benches were fucking up the budget that much? That’s crazy @MTA

Hi, Jeremy. Benches were removed from stations to prevent the homeless from sleeping on them. ^JP

“We have inconvenienced you and made the station more inaccessible to the pregnant, disabled and elderly, but you must understand that lets us inflict further misery on people without homes” ~ @MoonshineBunny
Joey Alison Sayers.
Where: Montreal subway stop How’s it hostile: Floating benches, including those at heights only suitable for children or the extremely short, make these benches impossible to sit on, offer no support and prevent them from being used for sleeping, or really, sitting for any period of time.
And if you’re old, or have an injury? Hostile benches.
Where: Montreal subway stop How’s it hostile: Super narrow benches prevent people from sleeping, and make it uncomfortable to sit on, especially for long durations.
