This course introduces students to the concepts of game mechanics, game theory and digital game production by affording them the opportunity to read about games and game development, play test several different video games, and finally to create their own games using important development tools. The course explores the effect of gaming on entertainment, learning, and even business by analyzing how games can be more critically discussed. In this way, students learn to be better developers through building skills in critical thinking, analysis, game design, and communication. On a deeper level, the course works to find ways to address fundamental misunderstandings by the general public that the form is entirely represented by games such as Grand Theft Auto, and Doom.

Game Title: Neptune’s Curse

Game Platform: Mac/PC

Audience: 13+

Genre: Platformer

Game Summary: 3,000 years in the future mankind is living on moons orbiting Neptune after an asteroid was on a path that would destroy the earth. Years had passed since Mankind's arrival on the moons, life has prospered and life had become normal once again until they discover a new threat. An expedition team finds a new moon where they discover a mineral that contains bacteria that causes the infection. After being exposed to the bacteria those infected could not be cured. After the contact people would start to lose their humanity. An outbreak eventually occurred and the virus was affecting everyone. All that was left was a chef in the back of a restaurant as everything around was turning into chaos. He walks out in curiosity of screams coming from outside and he sees his restaurant being destroyed by zombies. He grabs his kitchen utensils and prepares for what’s to come...

Game outline: The player guides the chef through different levels fighting through waves of zombies. You are able to throw knives and finds a special power up. Walking though the levels there are hidden survivors that if you find all of them you receive bonuses. Certain platforms will fall to keep players on their toes. Gravity will affect certain movements of the character like jumping and possibly running.

Title: Oily Greenhouse Escape

Game Platform: Mac and PC

Rating: E 10+

Genre: Platformer

Target Audience: Age 10-13

Game Summary: You are a super mutant plant that was experimented by scientist  to help you survive from the oil spill disasters. The EPA (US Environmental Protection Agency) found out about the experiments and shut down the greenhouse area, which held  heavy amounts of petroleum. Once the greenhouses were shut down, the oil company purchase the greenhouse to harvest the petroleum that were left inside the greenhouses .You are a super mutant plant named Pot, made of the highest amount of petroleum.The oil company found out and now they are after you. With your abilities you are trying to escape and rescue any other plants that may have the same levels of conscious that you have.

 Game Outline: The player guides Pot through multiple platform levels, using special abilities to fight against the evil oil company workers, who are trying to capture Pot (You) for your high amounts of petroleum.Defeat your opponents by using three super transformations. While progressing through the game by adapting to the area (color change)

Inspirations:

We got inspiration for the game from the game named Super Hot and a few others. We wanted to create a simple plat-former video game that would have use of the main mechanics Super Hot.

What Have Been Done:

The main character and enemy have been created. Most of the code for collision detention, movement and attack has also been completed with some minor problems where the movement of the player is not as responsive as it needs to be. 

Problems:

This is a big project and one that have never done before on Unity. Aside from learning the Unity interface for animation and animator, I also had to learn a wealth of information in order to code the main features of the game. Inheritance is by far one of the most confusing subject about C#. The game is a monster to code but

Future Iterations:

Regardless of the problems I have enjoyed working on the game, I had a lot of fun working on it. I would like to continue working on it in order to finish it as a fun project or sell it if able.

THE FINAL COUNTDOWN GAME 2 Requirements

Your final games are due next week and your presentations are next class.  

Your game should be hosted on itch.io with its own page, complete with the final version download, description and screenshots. (Example) Your game will be graded based on this download, so if it doesn’t work, there is nothing to grade.  A guide to building out your game in Unity can be found here.  Don’t forget to add all of your scenes to your build.  Feel free to e-mail me with any specific questions, which I will do my best to respond to within 48 hours.

Don’t forget your GDDs in their final state hosted on Google Drive or Dropbox and linked from your blog post (with itch.io link too).
