An Archive of Our Own, a project of the Organization for Transformative Works
Words: 3,289, Chapters: 1/1, Lars Lindstrom/Driver (Drive 2011)
“I’ll wash your jacket,” Lars says, holding his hand out. The bottom half of Driver’s jacket is dark and stained with blood. (The blood goes all the way around, like it’s not only from Driver’s injury. Lars pretends not to notice.) It’s ripped, next to the zipper, from the knife that was in his stomach. Lars doesn’t think Driver should wear a bloody jacket. Driver shakes his head, eyeing Lars warily. Well. That’s okay. Lars doesn’t like when people take his blanket, either. ~~~ Lars finds the Driver bleeding in his car on the side of the road. A tentative relationship forms.
This post is so funny like comment subscribe if you picture your favs bloodied and coughing on the floor and flinching
Loving all of the posts about Eva Stratt being the trolley operator but what I think some people are missing in their trolley problem analogies for Eva Stratt's choice is that Stratt was not a bystander pulling a lever, the lever had already been pulled and the trolley was barreling towards all of humanity and Stratt's choice was to make a desperate attempt to block the trolley with her own body but no matter how desperate she was to solve it on her own she knew she couldn't, she knew she needed others, she needed people willing to help take the force. The trolley was mere inches away and she needed only one more person, that person was her right hand man, her closest companian, her best friend, and she begged him to sit at her side on those tracks and he refused, looking down at her where she sat on those track yelling at her how unfair she was being to ask him to sit down, as if she did not know the pain of sitting there since day one. Yes she had to tie him to those tracks kicking and screaming, yes it hurt, but she did not do it from the sidelines, she was standing on the tracks herself
Stratt: I am sorry to inform you that we have to meet with the US President. Yáo, Dubois, and Ilyukhina, already on the plane: Is this optional Stratt: It is not. The astronauts, edging toward the door: Can it be
as much as it's AMAZING to have so much love and support for Stratt, I think the "she did nothing wrong" narrative is counterproductive
The whole reason it's such a big deal that she is so supported by the fandom is because she is a strong female character that does not act in a stereotypically feminine manner, and she isn't getting backlash for it. The fandom, rather than calling her a heartless bitch, is being sympathetic and understanding her point of view.
She did do things that most people would consider morally wrong. Moreso in the book than the movie but she did absolutely do wrong.
As one example: paving over the Sahara -and thus disrupting weather patterns and habitats globally- had massive negative consequences.
and that's the point. She's not supposed to be innocent and perfectly morally good. She operates in purely logical manner to give Project Hail Mary it's best Chance at success, which immediately lands her in morally grey territory. The long term survival of Earth was the number one priority at all times. Minimizing risk where possible is always ideal to ensure humanity had the best chances down the line, but she was willing to do what needed to be done.
If she let ethics and morality dictate her choices Earth would have died.
If you take nothing else away from this rambling I want that much to be remembered.
This doesn't mean she doesn't feel remorse. She does, the movie and the book convey it differently but they do both show it. She just manages to push it aside until after all is said and done.
I also feel like I have to specify that remorse and regret are different. She does not regret sending Grace on the mission against his will, she does not regret nuking Antarctica, she doesn't regret paving over The Sahara, she does not regret any of the hard calls she made as they are the reason there is still a planet to be saved by the time the Taumoeba reaches it. She would do it all again in a heartbeat. But she does absolutely feel remorse over the way certain things ended up having to play out.
continuing on my eva stratt train, i will be taking some of her energy into my senior year.
- i do not need to attend social functions
- it does not lessen who i am as a person if i leave a social situation early
- it is good to be firm about project deadlines and tasks
- this project will get done and done well come hell or high water
- i will nuke antarctica if i must

Little weirdos when they sit in the corner together
it took me a little time to warm up to eva but i think she is the fictional women we claim we want to see but then don’t like. she’s literally tasked with SAVING THE WORLD and i think it’s easy to forget that somehow. she is brave. she is working with incredible resources under immense pressure. billions of people’s lives have been ENTRUSTED TO HER SHE HAS TO SAVE AS MANY OF THEM AS SHE CAN. that’s unfathomable. and the fact that she pulled it off… eva stratt you are the woman ever.
cause here's the thing, even if movie!stratt didn't exist you couldn't pay me to hate book!stratt. maybe andy weir wrote her to be this cold, heartless character but still you can't make me hate her. she was a woman with the weight of the world on her shoulders and the leader to a seemingly impossible mission so i genuinely do not care if she's mean. in fact i hope she gets meaner and more ruthless. did you guys know she carried a taser with her.
