It was good that he was smart enough to not deny his participation; better that he didn't directly confirm it. In a war such as this, there was a need to maintain some veil of secrecy, to attempt to gain any intelligence without giving away information freely. Any servant who couldn't grasp that complexity was just a waste in her mind.
"Ordinarily a battle like this would, but we're meant to keep it secret, aren't we? Meaning those who rely on overwhelming power are at a huge disadvantage. If they use it, they're likely to drag civilians in; if they don't, what do they have left?"
