"I’m not sure,’ said Laurent, in a detached voice. ‘I was curious what kind of man you were. " -Captive Prince by C.S. Pacat
Illustration of this scene under the "read more" because of Tw blood and spoilers. Do i have started a re-read? Possibly. I wanted this to feel a bit rougher than the first one, because of the horribleness of the scene. Is there a possibility to spoiler- hide things on tumblr? Edit: Thanks for letting me know about the read more thing!
You won't believe it but I was debating on sending you a prompt the last few days just cause this quarantine has got me so depressed. So, the prompt is D/L from the infidelity au where Damen is married to Jokaste but is in love with Laurent who babysits for them. D and J are having a huge party in their house (could be a birthday/anniversary anything really) and J is all over D, hanging off his arm, socialising while L is jealous and sad. And then they sneak off to have hot, secret, aching sex.
all credits to ruby @goldencuffs who wrote the infidelity au that this prompt is based off of ❤️
Up here, the party was muffled.
There was one floor and two closed doors separating them. From the loud music and hazy conversation, couples hanging off each other’s arms and photographs being taken. It was a distant place, one Laurent wanted to block out from his mind and forget he’d been a part of.
All he cared about were the private moments. The veiled conversations and the lingering glances. All of the little moments that led to the discreet fingers on his wrist, the walk up the winding stairs, the bedroom he was pulled through until he was pushed into a private bathroom, pushed against a mirrored wall.

-" Don't be presumptuous" said Laurent, coldly. -"Too late, sweetheart." Captive Prince by C.S.Pacat
I love tense scenes like this! My friend is currently re-reading the trilogy again and sending me screenshots of our favorite scenes and I just had to draw one of them! I needed to make a new account for this though because I feel like fanarts just don't fit on my main one and this way i can just post random drawings whenever I have a fan outburst again. Hope you enjoy!
Torveld volunteered to let them braid his hair for practice because there’s no way he’s letting Erasmus alone with Damen. Ya know… Just in case.

“When I started to write Captive Prince I just naturally wanted to explore that kind of biased viewpoint. I wanted to use it as a kind of power in my book. We so often simply believe the hero-protagonist’s view of the world. I wanted to create that kind of classic hero (Damen), but then have his black and white views of the world subverted, have them break down over the course of the book. Laurent I created to be his foil, the antihero to his hero. To construct him, I allowed him to act, then let Damen make assumptions, to generalise, as we all do, to construct reality from own his experiences. Laurent is cruel to Damen, therefore Laurent must be a cruel person. The Regent is kind to Damen, therefore the Regent must be a kind person. Here and there, I seeded contrary information, which the reader notices, but which Damen ignores. Laurent’s men are loyal, well managed, and highly disciplined. Laurent protects others where his limited power allows him to, often at cost to himself. Laurent repays his debts. Laurent keeps his word. I wanted to create a dissonance, a series of false notes to try to make the reader start to doubt Damen’s account. I think a key moment in Captive Prince is when we see Laurent interact with Nicaise for the first time, because Laurent is straightforward and fraternal with Nicaise, against all expectation. I wanted the reader to see that Laurent behaves with others differently than he does Damen. Soon after, Erasmus tells Damen that Laurent is kind. Erasmus and Damen have both made simplistic assumptions about Laurent–although their assumptions are opposite. Of course, we know Laurent is not kind, but we also start to realise–Laurent has a lived reality beyond Damen’s experience of him. These are the first moments of realising –wait, Damen’s narrative is limited. Damen doesn’t understand everything that is going on.”
— C.S. Pacat on biased viewpoints
I finally did it ! I’ve finished my (old) illustration of Laurent of Vere and Damen (or more likely Damianos of Akielos here !) from the beautiful Captive Prince books ! I’ll never be tired of them I think haha… I love to think about them sometimes, happy together, lazily chilling after a long day ruling their kingdom together… I hope you’ll like them too !
“Is there no way forward for us?”
The reviews on Goodreads about Capri baffle me it’s almost like we didn’t read the same books.
People are just tossing big words and adding the « it’s not sexy » like yeah no shit that’s the point of the story. The whole universe is built on fucked up ideologies that existed (maybe not exactly that way ;it was worst irl) but existed in the respective timelines Vere and Akielon were inspired of and the books are not romanticizing any of it but showing how damaging and wrong slavery, rape, pedophilia, vengeance, greed ect ect are and showing how two people raised in those ideologies managed to not only accept a different culture but accept the flaws of their own and are willing to change it and better their societies.
And for the folks out there that are mad about (spoiler alert) the way Laurent treated Damen I wonder how y’all would react if the person who took away the only family you had and was the catalyst of everything that went wrong in your life was in front of you in chains. The books didn’t romanticized that either btw, Laurent knew who Damen was and hated his guts and that blinded him. This was highlighted when Damen told him that if he was anyone else Laurent would have freed him; this alone speaks volumes about where Laurent stands. And for Damen he didn’t fall in love with Laurent after being flogged but after a long journey of discovering who Laurent is really and both of them taking the time to heal the wounds the war left.
+Those two are actually one of the rare well written enemies to lovers ships.
From the prompt list:
46. a swirling reunion kiss
For Lamen please
There's always been a strange place in Laurent's heart for feats of strength. Sheer physical might is not an arena he has ever excelled in, or ever truly wanted to—the mind is so much more valuable. And yet brute strength has always fascinated him, filled him with an awe that he told himself was contempt.
Damianos, in this as in everything else, has a way of making him love what he tells himself he hates. A way, too, of making him face the truth about himself, however uncomfortable.
After nearly a fortnight away, Damen pulls his galloping horse up just enough to leap from its back, and sweeps Laurent into his arms. He lifts Laurent like he weighs no more than a handful of grapes, and spins him round and round, both of them laughing like children. By the time their lips meet, Laurent has his legs wrapped around Damen's waist and his hands buried in warm curls, pulling him closer, closer. His whole body is sparking with the sweet fire only Damen awakens in it, and he can admit, these days, that Damen's strength is part of that. The heart and mind matter more, much more, but Laurent still loves the idea of Damen's total physical superiority—loves it because he has no fear of it, knows Damen would hurt himself before Laurent every time.
He steers Damen inside and pushes him down onto the bed, kissing him like his life depends on it, and thinks—not for the first time—that it really might.
