When Other Allergic People Brag About Their Local Organic Farmers
For anyone who is interested here is a brief synopsis of a book you might enjoy:
Newly released fantasy novel features a gluten-intolerant protagonist
The Second Mango, by Shira Glassman Queen Shulamit never expected to inherit the throne of the tropical land of Perach so young. At twenty, grief-stricken and fatherless, she’s also coping with being the only lesbian she knows after her sweetheart ran off for an unknown reason. Not to mention, she’s the victim of severe digestive problems that everybody think she’s faking. When she meets Rivka, an athletic and assertive warrior from the north who wears a mask and pretends to be a man, she finds the source of strength she needs so desperately.
Unfortunately for her, Rivka is straight, but that’s okay — Shulamit needs a surrogate big sister just as much as she needs a girlfriend. Especially if the warrior’s willing to take her around the kingdom on the back of her dragon in search of other women who might be open to same-sex romance. The real world outside the palace is full of adventure, however, and the search for a royal girlfriend quickly turns into a rescue mission when they discover a temple full of women turned to stone by an evil sorcerer.
Shulamit’s food issues and the difficulty she has getting people to believe her about them play a big part in not only her characterization, but also in the plot as well. I based her problems with gluten and poultry proteins on my spouse’s gluten intolerance and the chicken allergy of one of my close friends.
The Second Mango is available on eBook for $5.79 on Prizm Books and on Amazon Kindle, and in print/paperback for $14.95 at Wild Iris Books. Amazon print link here.

Scientifically, what causes allergies?
Well in simplest terms and in the most easy way to understand this is what happens:
Your body has an immune system which is supposed to kill invaders of your body that can potentially kill you. One of the types of cells that kills these "invaders" are called mast cells which cause inflammatory response. If they find an unknown protein that they deem dangerous they release a chemical called Histamine. Histamine brings in a bunch of white blood cells to help fight the "invaders". This is good when something bad actually does get into your system, but sometimes it reacts to something not dangerous, like plants or food, and it causes an inflammatory response that is basically an overreaction.
Did that make sense? I'm not sure...
When someone asks you if you'll ever simply "get over" your allergies:
I have a gluten intolerance, and while I know that it's not as bad as other potential allergies, it still gets me down nonetheless. Thanks for making this blog. I can feel comfortable being slightly allergic to gluten because I know I have company. :)
I think all of us know that there's a huge amount of stress associated with having an allergy or intolerance on a daily basis and I really just want this blog to be a place where we can all hang out and laugh about it.
((In other news I'm in dire need of ideas for more posts, my brainspace is entirely taken up and I'm having trouble coming up with new things so submit away!!))
This is my most favourite blog on the internet! I don't know anyone else with allergies the same as me and every single post on this blog is one I can relate to - whoever you are can we please be best friends aha :')
Awwww! That's really sweet! Thank you! If you want to you can check out/message me on my personal blog here. (I'm not super scary... I think...)
