With that being said, both Howlett boys grew up in an incredibly dysfunctional household.
Because of the age gap, there was a little bit of distance between the two brothers. Especially once Baz started to get involved in some shady things™, but either way, Kota just looked up to him wholeheartedly. He thought Baz was the coolest, and wanted to be exactly like him.
As Kota grew up, his father became less patient with him-- the excuse of him being a baby was no longer tolerated, and he made that known pretty much every day.
Dakota could remember hiding in his room, watching movies on his little crappy TV that his mom managed to get for him; blasting the volume up so loud, until he could barely hear the screaming voices in the background.
Though, that never jived all too well. At certain points, his dad would burst in his room and unplug the TV-- screaming obscenities at him every which way. One day, he even went as far as chucking the TV out of the house in some drunken rage; Dakota’s world of escapism was completely demolished.
His mother, the sweet thing that she was, would secretly take him out to the movies whenever she got the chance; she knew it was important to him, and put a smile on his face. Dakota would cherish those memories for the rest of his days.
His mother had fallen ill, and he was only 11 years old at the time of her passing. Dakota was left to the devices of his father, and that fact was absolutely terrifying.
But with age, came resistance-- following in the footsteps of his brother, which may not have been the smartest route, but it worked well enough.
It’s not that he fell into as shady of a crowd as his brother had, but Dakota definitely found himself hanging out with some of the more alternative kids, and their activities just intensified up into his teenaged years. Late nights spent out partying, doing drugs, or lighting shit on fire just meant that he didn’t have to endure as much of the bullshit when he got home. Because by the time he snuck back in, his old man was already passed out on the couch.
During the duration of time from which their mother passed, to Kota being roughly 16 years old, Baz had been working hard to get legal guardianship over his younger brother. It was a long road, filled with many barriers and draw backs, but it finally happened.
Dakota has been living in the Oasis apartments with Baz ever since.
His sense of responsibility was pretty shit for the remainder of highschool, barely graduating, having to stay back an additional year.
Barely had motivation to do quite literally anything but smoke weed, and chill by the pool.
Only recently ( in the last 5 years ) found himself considering some sort of career in the film industry. It was a passion as a child, might as well make it a living.
Didn’t have enough money to attend collage, so he ended up sticking his foot in the door by hanging around sets, networking, and offering to assist for free in the beginning. Was essentially a bitch-boy ( production assistant ) up until this year, and then finally got the opportunity to try his shot at 2nd AC.
ADDITIONAL FACTS
Used to work at Paco’s Taco’s, MILK, and Trader Joe’s -- was fired from all of them, due to never arriving on time for shifts, or missing them completely.
Has a soft spot for animated films, but fuck off, no he doesn’t.
Definitely has undiagnosed adhd.
Big, big BIGGGGG maladaptive day-dreamer.
Used to film and edit skateboarding reels for his friends, still does when he feels up to it.
Loves a good joint to mellow out, loves to snort a lil to keep ‘focused’ -- or at least, that’s his excuse.
