Halloween brings a powerful full moon and a frantic search for Sirius Black. Paired with a deteriorating Remus, Selene is forced to act quickly when the night turns dangerous. The aftermath leaves troubling suspicions behind: Something went wrong with the Wolfsbane. While Padfoot pays a long-overdue visit to the Rift, November arrives with the first Quidditch match of the year, and a storm that turns celebration into disaster.

This doesn’t seem to be just another moon. Even her magic is enhanced, stronger.  By sheer force of will, they reach Remus’s private quarters at last. Although, by the time she tugs him towards his bed, he’s already mumbling incoherent words, breathing erratic and raspy.  Selene Accio’s a nearby rag and a jug of water while removing her student gown off his head. A deep shudder courses through him, and it’s a wonder he hadn’t passed out already. “You’re in your bed, Remus. It’s okay. You’re okay. You can lie back if you want to.”  “S-Si-Sirius…” He babbles, somehow refusing to follow her instructions. “H-h-h-help him…” He hiccups. “I’ll do my best. Promise. But you need to lie down now, alright—?” Shaking his head, a hand clutches desperately at the hem of her wrist. "D-don't let them take him…” He trembles like a leaf, “He c-can be saved… you can… you—" Unable to do anything else but soothe him, she tries to cradle him by the shoulders. “Easy, there. I’m here.” Selene insists, “I’m listening…” “... You… creature—!” The deep growl that splurts off his throat seeps through her skin, rattling her very bones, her breath hitching.  That’s Moony.  “AAAARGH!"

Remus smiles pleasantly again, “Sorry, I thought you knew, Harry. Miss Wood here has taken upon herself to become my assistant of sorts, in exchange for some mentorship.” “Yeah, it’s a side job of mine!” She comes up with a half-lie on the fly. Still, the boy wonders. “Um, and the goblet…?” “Ah. Professor Snape has very kindly concocted a potion for me. I’ve never been much of a potion-brewer and this one is particularly complex.” Remus sniffs the draught, sighing in disappointment. “Pity sugar makes it useless…” He adds, taking a sip and shuddering. “Why—?” Harry begins, looking alarmed. “The Professor’s been feeling a bit blue lately,” Selene surmises in Remus’s stead. “That’s about right. This concoct is the only thing that’s been helping me so far.” She wasn’t ready for the grateful smile Remus sends her way, “I’m very lucky to be working alongside Snape for this medicine, and to have Selene here to cover up for some of my slip-ups.” She blushes a bit at the praise. “Ah, hah. It’s no problem at all, Professor. Just doing my job.” “Don’t sell yourself short. I see now why McGonagall took you under her wing all these years.” He takes another sip of the goblet, suppressing a shudder and looking at Harry. “I’m sure you agree with me on pointing out how impeccably diligent she is, right?” Harry seems to relax at the subtle distraction, nodding. “Why, thank you Harry. I’m glad you don’t think of me as just another Quaffle head.” “You’re a good friend of Hermione. She speaks very highly of you.” He mentions as if it’s obvious.

As Hogwarts warms to its new Defense professor, she begins to understand the burden he carries—and the careful balance required to stand at his side. But admiration comes with scrutiny. And while Lupin earns the school’s favor, Snape is already looking for a reason to tear it all down.

“I almost forgot.” Remus recalls, “Are you subscribed to the Daily Prophet?” “Uhhh, no…” She purses her lips guiltily. Her reasons for not doing so are more of a family matter than a personal one. “Why’re you asking?” Immediately, Remus’s eyes shoot to his lap, avoiding her gaze. “Oh, nevermind. It’s nothing.” She gives him a look—it can’t be actually nothing. “Something I should have news on?” “N-no! Nothing that should concern you, no. Or… well,” He seems to give it a second thought, “I… don’t really know…” Shrugging, she rips off the bandaid. “What is it, then?”  Deflating, Remus seems to give it a lot of thought to speak his mind, his lips pursing more than once as if mulling it over again and again—clearly, having a tough argument with his wolf within. With a huff, he ends up removing himself from the table, returning with a copy of the newspaper. Giving it a peek, the headline flares in angry bold letters:  ‘BLACK SIGHTED NEAR HOGWARTS’  “Oh, Black…” Selene drops her almost empty teacup atop the table, well aware it’s not an easy matter to delve into. “I, uh… well. I didn’t know this, no.” She’s willing to admit with a sneer, “Old friend of yours, if I recall it right?” Remus shakes his head sadly, “Frankly? Don’t know if I can say that nowadays.”

Professor McGonagall entrusts Hermione Granger with a secret. Dumbledore assigns Selene Wood with a new role for the year. One that Lupin was never warned about.

Snape takes a step forward, “We wished to discuss a matter of which the Director believes you could be of assistance with. However—” His tone grows serious, “What we are about to disclose must not leave this office.” “Discretion is paramount here, Miss Wood,” Dumbledore joins in, “As it regards school safety as well as, most importantly, Mr. Lupin’s here. Do you understand?”  Her brows quirk up in both curiosity and concern, stealing a glance at the aforementioned new Professor by her left. Lupin’s eyes don’t meet her, though, growing tense at the attention and situation at hand.  This close, she can notice his complexion being somewhat sickly, sporting tired green eyes over a grey face, a tint of yellowish around the corners. Her eyes didn’t lie to her at the Hogwarts Express, after all.  Flecks of grey-white pepper his light brown hair, despite appearing around his thirties—certainly as young as Snape, that’s for sure. The tip of his nose perks a bit at her very brief examination, denoting a reflex for scenting the air around him. She’s known only one woman with the same few, yet very particular characteristics.   Their appearances aren’t a product of an illness, but from a curse. She, of most people, can tell that. “I do.” The least Selene wants is to appear rude, but after a breath of consideration, she opts to just spill it out. Were she in his shoes, she’d prefer to rip off the bandaid than the other way around. “Pardon my bluntness, Professors, but… is this regarding his lycanthropy?”

Chapter 2: The Black Dog

Pilton, Somerset. Summer heat, loud guitars, cheap beer. On their way back from Glastonbury, Oliver and Selene Wood find a wounded black dog collapsed in a dead-end alley. He's massive, shaggy, with shadow-grey eyes. And a broken leg. He looks at Selene like she’s something to fear. She steps closer anyway.

Oliver stutters, stopping short, something near the alleyway where their Apparition Point awaits them grabbing his attention. His excitement falters a bit, and that prompts her attention.  “Huh?” Selene stretches her neck, following Oliver’s eyes, and then she sees it too. A shaggy, quite dirty black dog had seemed to take shelter in the empty and unimpressive alleyway, lying on his side near a brick wall.   Its eyes are half lidded as if fighting the will to close them, and one of its front legs has a noticeable tremor. Adding up its hard panting, it’s easy to assume it seems to have been recently wounded. Her shoulders slouch, feeling bad for the poor animal. The summer heat surely isn’t doing it any help too, as it keeps struggling to not faint somehow. Oliver’s dirty blonde brows curl in a highly skeptical frown, but she sees no reason to grow wary, taking the first steps towards the creature and leaving her brother behind. “Hey, boy. What’s wrong with you?” She tries for a soothing, low voice, not wanting to startle it firsthand, “You alright?”  The dog slowly flutters his eyes open—overall, it looks like a male—and it’s after she skits closer to him when she notices how huge he actually is. However, the moment his shadow grey gaze, a lovely hue, seems to clear somehow and spots her shape, the dog goes stiff as a board; body visibly tensing, eyes wide and unblinking. For some reason, her presence perturbs him. That’s starkly uncommon in her experience.
