Newsflash: NONE of the gods OR goddesses were feminists! If your conclusion came from Medusa’s myth (which btw Ovid made up) then with that means ALL the goddesses are misogynists. I mean, Aphrodite and Persephone treated Psyche horribly, Artemis punished Aura and Callisto cruelly even if they were HER hunters, and Hera with Leto, Semele, Alcemene, Lamia and Io? All of them are equally horrible, so it wouldn’t be JUST ATHENA.

Also, gods are very complex and may happen to contradict themselves. Like how Artemis tells Agammemnon to sacrifice his daughter (even though his daughter counted as a virgin- which she protects). Or how Hera, goddess of women, punishes women who sleep with her husband. But a misogynistic goddess wouldn’t save a girl from being raped (by her least favorite uncle, but still). A misogynistic goddess wouldn’t gift a woman wisdom and skill for the sake of giving wisdom and skill to those who want to. Sure, a PRIDEFUL goddess would hate people having sex on her temple, a temple of a VIRGIN GODDESS, regardless if it was consensual or not. A PRIDEFUL goddess would hate if a person who she gifted BESTS her at HER craft. Arachne was hubristic, people. She was hubristic.

I mean, I understand why people want to shape the gods into certain tropes, to view them in the modern world or make them more relatable, but THEY’RE GODS! I definitely talked about this before but the “for her beauty she was raped, for her ugliness she was murdered” always gave me the ick, it’s simply not rooted in reality. It implies that only conventionally attractive women get assaulted, which is a horrible way to view how assault works bc it’s basically stating that rape is mainly about lust, it’s not, it’s about power, it’s violating another person’s bodily autonomy to exert your power over them, anyone regardless of how beautiful or ugly they are can get raped.

It’s ironically another way Danaë is sidelined, hell in “Stone Blind” Medusa straight up rambles about how Perseus was antagonistic towards Polydectes for no reason bc he was never “actually” interested in Danaë bc she’s an older woman and single mother and she’s just not attractive, I wish I was making that up but I’m not and ppl are praising this book for how feminist it is. The fact that Danaë is an older woman matters to her story (at youngest she’d be in her mid to late 30s), back then (and even now) youth was viewed in high regard, yet Danaë isn’t youthful anymore, she’s “past her prime” so to speak but a powerful man like Polydectes still wanted to either enslave or marry her, bc again it’s not about lust it’s about power, it wouldn’t be far fetched to say that he wanted her bc she rejected him and he just couldn’t handle that, he can’t stand that a poor abandoned woman would not be interested in him, the king and wealthiest man in the island.

Another way I think Percy Jackson and Harry Potter are completely opposites is in how they were treated by their creators, the first one, a character turned into a product and the second one, a product turned into a character.

(⚠️Spoilers for Percy Jackson ahead⚠️...And also Harry Potter who even cares about that saga anymore #FuckJKR #FuckHarryPotterFans)

Percy Jackson actually started out as a character made to oppose what most people thought had to be "main characters" he was workikg class, he was the son of a single mother, , he was physically and verbally abused, he was disabled, wasn't considered to be conventionally attractive (Or at least people didn't treats him like he was),but, he was an icon, an icon to those who finally felt like they could be protagonists of their stories and not just "sidekicks" or characters randomly adrede for performative representation...And then came Heroes of Olympus, bookseries in which...The character, made to uplift those underepresented was turned into the ""stupid"" golden retriever boyfriend. Now, I don't believe anyone is stupid, idiocy is concept mostly based on ableism, but we can't deny Percy lost all his wit, which is only shown (pretty horribly) when Rick Riordan wants to say "Hey guys! 'Persassy' isn't gone! Look at him go!" His only notable actions/feats at some point just revolve around Annabeth, He got better at studies? He's working hard to go to college with his girlfriend! He was able to keep some of his memories after a goddess tries erasing them? Of course he only remembered Annabeth! He discovered he could control poison? How romantic! He did that to save Annabeth...And don't even make me start on the show, Rick, you can't be that thoughtless when choosing actors for your series, and you can't just erase the complex topics from your work, which, AGAIN, seemed to help a lot of people just because "representing poverty/abuse are too dark topics to represent on the big screen" Kids get abused everyday Rick, kids live in poverty everyday Rick, I assure you, those aren't just "adult themes". Overall: Percy was reduced to what the fandom found most appealing about him, of course I don't mean all the kids or even adults that san themselves in him, I mean the shippers, the people that only car wife their "beloved PercaBeth" is canon.

Now for Harry Potter...He really is just a product huh? In most merch he's reduced to him glasses and scar, the traits most, even the ones that weren't involved with the books/movies, can recognize him from. Nothing about him seemed to be further explored upon, his trauma after being abused by the Dursleys? That just explains his attitude and indpendence! As we all know: Trauma just makes us stronger: Right? His reaction to the magical elements of the world? Oh, well he asks superficial questions to the audience can have the minimal information required, he doesn't care all that much to be honest....Bioessentialism being just thrown at his face the moment he enters school? Well...Just human nature/ref to that one JKR interview...But suddenly, when the books become a massive hit, when people started creating one of the biggest fandoms the world had ever known...Harry was so much more, there were fanfics, exploring those sidekicks of him Jk was too lazy to delve into, there were theories, both about the wizarding world and the characters...And of course, they just had to be canon! People guessed it, of course, it's not like some parts of the story were merely added to please fans...What do you mean? Of course Johanne had it all figured it out from the start!

I mourn the way Percy used to be written and I hate people keep giving attention to one of the most commercial sagas to exist, just because they all collectively agreed a character was a certain way and the author let them...Although this last part technically happened to both of them.

like no actually i think we should listen to kids asking you not to sexualize characters their age actually? i think is entirely valid that a minor watching a media and seeing themselves represented in a character and then going online and seeing the character sexualized and/or shipped with adults, and then being uncomfortable with thar and being anti that is actually a totally valid thing to do and response
