Final Evaluation

Reviewing this project as a whole I have learnt more this term than any term on this course so far, it has definitely been the most independent project so far but I have really enjoyed that aspect of it and it has allowed me to make several mistakes which frustrated me at the time but now looking back I feel much more confident in those areas than I would have if it had all gone smoothy first time over. This project has also been the most creative to date which meant I could be as imaginative as possible when designing and that I was actually really interested in all the research I was doing.

I have learnt that certain processes take much longer than anticipated, for example, creating a fibreglass copy of the models head, therefore I now know to allow extra time for this in the future. I am happy that I have pushed myself to learn these things in this project rather than getting to third year and not knowing what to do or how long everything takes. Time management is so important.

This project has confirmed my specialist interest in prosthetic and highlighted sculpting as definitely my strength, whereas running the appliance and certain aspects of moulding I definitely need to practice more in. I have gained many advanced technical skills throughout this project and enjoyed the collaboration aspect with my photographer and editor.

Time-Lapse of Application

I decided to film the application process of my final makeup and make it into a time-lapse demonstrating the steps taken to achieve my final images. The card I was filming onto however ran out of space half way through so I had to improvise by adding photos at the end. I’m really happy with the way this has come out and it is nice to see the creation of this character.

Final Assessment Makeup Application

At the beginning of my assessment Sara came round and asked how long we would be needing, unaware of the maximum time we could have had I said three hours not completely knowing as I hadn’t yet had a chance to do a full run through of the makeup. I had another makeup student Polly helping me to apply this makeup which turned out to be a massive help.

The first step of applying the makeup was clean my models face and slip her hair back, then proceed with gluing down the appliance. Just as I had practiced before with the gelatine appliance I used Prosaide began by glueing the line down the nose. Me and Polly then took a side each and worked our way out from the centre and down the face. The process of gluing the prosthetic down went pretty smoothly. Im not sure if the silicone had stretched slightly as I’d been painting it etc as the chin section seemed a tad low and the face had to be pulled slightly up and out to ensure it was a comfortable fit, but this wasn’t noticeable and it all worked fine.

Once the piece was glued down I went in blending away the edges with IPA, the edge of the appliance weren’t too bad but the sections around the eyes and the mouth needed some work. Due to this not being a perfect run of the appliance I found it hard to get the edges of the mouth and eyes looking perfect. On the plus side however the colouring of the appliance was not too far off from that of my models skin, therefore these blending edges appeared even nicer.

We then fixed the ears into the hair with pins going through pin curls sitting underneath them on the head. This worked surprisingly well and ears were pretty secure. I glued my models ears back and hid them under her hair to ensure they weren’t seen.

I then lay the left over hair I had from punching the prosthetic over the edges of the appliance to create the illusion that the hair was running back into her own. I really wish I had had time to fully punch the hair as I think it would have looked much more realistic although the laying looked okay in the end. Was quite a time consuming process however which could have been avoided if the hair was punched.

I actually ran out of time to complete the body painting which I was gutted about but managed to paint her chest to give a feel of what I had in mind.

Overall I am pleased with the way this final makeup turned out although there are a few areas I wish that I had had extended time to complete and work into a bit more. As I hadn’t been able to get hold of my model for a complete run through of the whole makeup I felt that this turned out more like a practice should than a final, however I was still very excited and happy to see my design come to life with all the pieces I had spent so long making.

Preparation for Assessment

Now that all the most important aspects of my final makeup were ready for my assessment I could put my attention towards accessories that would add to my final image. These were things such as the teeth below, I bought these as part of a party pack on eBay and had painted them slightly to make them look creepier. I think that this will definitely make my character appear scarier in my final shoot.

I also took a trip to ‘Fabric Land’ to get some fabric to create a cloak for my character which could act as her skin / fur and add a more sinister feel to the final photos. I decided to go for a grey fake fur which I slightly broke down using vaseline.

Fingernails

Although from the very beginning of my designs I had wanted to create long fingernails for my final makeups it turned out that they wouldn’t particularly go with my final outcome and due to a few mistakes occurring during the making process putting me slightly behind schedule I decided that these were not a priority.

The above images show the sculpt of the nails I had planned to use however and a ‘Fast Cast’ resin run of one of them.

Creating the Horns

Now that the ears were ready for the final makeup having been run and painted I had to think about making the horns that would attach onto them. The first thing I thought to make these out of was a hard resin and through calling up PS Composites I found that ‘Fast Cast’ might be the stuff for this. I had never worked with this material before but it sounded pretty straight forward with just mixing equal parts of A and B. I sculpted three different sized horns (x3) to fit in the holes left in the ears and a tall clay wall around them. I then made a silicone mould of these horns and poured ‘Fast Cast’ resin into this mould.

The horns did not set how I had expected however with the ends breaking off at they went down quite thin. It was getting quite close to my assessment at this point so I had to think of a quick alternative. ‘Super Sculpey’ seemed like a good idea so I sculpted the same horns as before out of this material and stuck them in the oven for ten minutes. They actually ended up looking quite effective however and I super gluing them into place.

Finding a Location for my Final Shoot

When looking for a location to shoot my final images I wanted somewhere really dark and creepy to portray how she had been made an outcast and lived all alone in bitterness and hatred for the world. I was at first searching for some kind of ruins in the area when my friend suggested some old unused stables on his farm in Kinson which I could use. So I went to check out the location and it was just what I was looking for.

Finding a photographer for my Assessment

Since a few weeks back I have been posting on AUB groups and such in search for a photographer to collaborate with in this project, although due to my lack of contacts in photography and everyone having deadlines and such I was unable to find anyone. I did however find an aspiring professional from the bournemouth area who was looking to build his portfolio.

Hair Punching my Prosthetic Appliance

To prepare for hair punching my appliance I mixed up the human and yak hair and lay the mixture between the draw mats, I then made my own punching tool by cutting down a needle and began to punch the hair. This took a little while to get the hang of but after a short time became fairly easy, I however had underestimated how time consuming this process was and ended up only having time to punch the hair line in with everything else I had to prepare for my assessment. Due to this I will have to lay all the remaining hair behind it during my assessment, I am slightly worried how this will affect the application time.
