Saw the outsiders tour last night, get ready for a long ass post!

First things first i adore the book and movie sooooo much and i have been so excited about the musical. I managed to not listen to the soundtrack since it came out because I wanted to wait to see it live and a whole two years, later here I am.

The cast was absolutely incredible. I saw an understudy for dally and he was phenomenal. The kid playing ponyboy was adorable and really captured the youth of the character. it was really awesome seeing such young kids lead a national tour.

As for the show itself, it’s funny because it’s a pretty mid level fine show with a couple of INCREDIBLE moments, most notably for me being when johnny kills bob, the rumble (obviously) and the scene at the end when darrel says I love you to ponyboy. I found myself a disappointed in the songs which were a little too narrative and in your face for my liking. I don’t see myself ever going out of my way to listen to the soundtrack. I also felt as though the book was pretty weak when it is pulling from such great source material.

I am so frustrated and upset that they changed dally’s death to be getting hit by a train and not suicide by cop. it feels so cowardly from the writers. why bother adapting this book if you are going to sanitize the death of a prominent character especially in this political climate.

On a similar level i’m frustrated that they never mentioned that darrel was trying to keep the family together and pony/soda out of a boys home. his whole thing was how he provides for them and works his ass off for them but somehow that was never brought up??? it would have made him so much more sympathetic.

The technical elements of this show were some of the best i’ve seen on stage. the combination of the underwater sound effects and flash banging the audience at the end of act one… i was astounded

what if you were a paleontologist and you spent FOUR YEARS working on a BRONTOSAURUS and just when you think you’re gonna get a MILLION DOLLAR grant and GET MARRIED a random woman at a golf course dents your CAR and lures you to CONNECTICUT to help with her new pet LEOPARD named BABY and you wind up NAKED in her FRILLY ROBE and her dog steals your DINOSAUR BONE and you have to run through the COUNTRYSIDE chasing a LEOPARD AND A DOG in the DARK and you don’t know there’s a second WILD LEOPARD from the CIRCUS and then you go to JAIL and she pretends to be a GANGSTER and successfully ESCAPES OUT A WINDOW and your FIANCÉE comes to bail you out but the cops think your name is MR. BONE and your new girlfriend drags the KILLER LEOPARD into the jail on a LEASH and then you get DUMPED and get the MILLION DOLLARS and confess you LOVE the CRAZY GIRL all in the last five minutes? and then she KNOCKS OVER your BRONTOSAURUS.

okay bc i keep seeing discourse on twitter here is my (correct) opinion on what El’s style would be like today

i think El would love to thrift and give a second life to well loved clothes that have since been discarded.

I think she would be drawn to earth tones, wear patterns on patterns on patterns, well worn denim, always have layers, live in a broken in pair of boots, and never leaves the house without a tote bag

her tote bags would be absolutely bursting with anything anybody could need at any moment. she’s the friend that you always go to if you need a cough drop, an ibuprofen, a granola bar, an extra sweater, she’s got it in her tote bag.

maybe this is an unpopular opinion but i find the vecna/holly/kids story to be the most interesting plotline of the season so far, idk how people are calling it boring, i feel like 90% of the substance of the show is within those scenes

steve and dustin have a more compelling relationship than every single one of the couples or ships on the show sans lumax
