First generation (1965,1966) Ford Mustang at Sauk Valley Shifters Car Show and Swap Meet in Sterling, Illinois.
This is how the Mustang began.
There are two different stories of how the Mustang got its name. In one, the designer, John Najjar, was a fan of the Mustang World War 2 fighter plane and used it as the inspiration for the car. In the other, a marketing executive named it after the breed of horses known as “mustangs”.
The first car to be given the name was actually a mid-engine 1962 Ford concept car. If the production Mustang would have been mid-engined, that would have made it one of the first modern mid-engine production cars along with the Lotus Europa S1 and the Lamborghini Miura.
Either way, the beautifully designed front-engined car that ended up becoming the Mustang is now one of the most significant and instantly recognizable cars in history.
