Have you noticed how often heās kneeling to her (or her image is otherwise higher than he is?) I love that.
Also, I realize that this is a tender, vulnerable, pure romance, but I am not tender vulnerable and pure so when he told her to use him for as long as she likes and then throw him away, my mind went utterly elsewhereā¦
(They made it pretty explicit heās never had another relationship except for their teen romance and not even held hands with anyone. Ummmm, no wonder heās so insanely intense. Heās what - a mid twenties male virgin? Thatās sort ofā¦ummmā¦not even sure whatās that sort of but itās something.)
Not only are they always picturing him as looking up to her with the sort of worshipful gaze that heās always giving, and intentionally putting himself physically lower that she is, we also see that she is conscious of what he is doing and even attempts to put the two of them on the same level.
In episode 14, when heās kneeling in front of her and apologizing yet again she does it:
She gets down below him so that she can look up into his face, and reiterate that what happened is not his fault. The blocking in this is really thoughtful. You would almost write an entire meta on just how the characters are framed in relationship to each other and how it translates in terms of their emotional dynamics.
Thereās also something very high romance about these two, and I love it.
This is not hijacking at all and I agree that their positions are tied deeply with both his sense of unworthiness and her being his ideal of love and peace. High romance is a good way to describe it (minus the adultery so beloved by Marie de France :P) It ties with the whole āhe is in her permanent service whenever she needs it, expecting nothing backā theme.
