Business of Film Mastery Journal
The final month of my Film Production Masters journey was Business of Film. Over the course of the month, we discussed multiple ways to manage a career in the film industry successfully. We have done case studies on film festivals and multiple online platforms that we can market our films with. We also have done interviews and deal negotiations with industry professionals. This month has provided me with an excellent understanding of the business side of the industry and has helped me acquire professional skills I will need to when going for interviews and talking with business professionals.
We started the month off my giving our personal 30-second elevator pitch, which was good practice for all of us. We also began building our resumes. While I had already had one created, I decided to make mine look a bit more professional, and I was able to add to it due to the project I had worked on over the more recent months. After submitting it, I was able to get feedback and change recommendations to make my resume the best it can be. This month we have been working on branding and trying to build a profile for ourselves. Along with the resume, we are creating a personal website and name branding video where can showcase our work and achievements. This is a great opportunity because it is a smart way to get our work out there as well as put our personality into creating it.
While we have been trying to build a name for ourselves and get ready for the next step after graduation, we are also starting to market our thesis films. We have done case studies on film festivals that we can submit our film too, as well as build our EPK, which is essential for submitting our film to festivals. By the end of this month, we hope to have already been subjected to multiple festivals and be ready to move to the next step in our career.
This month has been a very helpful experience as I am leaving with new knowledge and skills that I will take with me as I take the next step in my career. In the future, these skills will help me successfully find an entry-level position in the film industry.

Film Thesis Assembly
This month film production assembly was challenging. It has probably been the biggest challenge on my academic life. I have never been drawn to sound department since I started filmmaking. I am familiar with cameras but not with sound equipment.
My goal for this class was to improve my knowledge on deliverables process and sound mixing. Another goal for this month is to learn to use Pro Tools even though I can only understand the basic but it is very helpful to build the basic knowledge of editing sound of film. I believe I still have a lot to learn, because this month felt really short considering how much information is in it, but it was a great start. The exercises on Lynda.com helped a lot to comprehend sound post terminology and how Pro Tools work to create sound design. Also, the lectures were very informative with creative ways to use the sound to enhance the film experience to evoke emotion. I enjoyed working in Dub stage which gave me lots of valuable experience. Editing sound requires lots of effort, not only knowledge but practical skills.
I am still not picturing myself in a career in sound, but I know it is very important to understand the whole process of filmmaking, because it gives an idea of how important everybody’s job is, and how much effort it takes for each one to achieve theirs. Also as a DP, it is also important to combine sound and image. In conclusion, I had an amazing month with a lot of professional people in the dub stage and it was very constructive for me.

Mastery Journal- Production
This month is stressful and rewarding, we finally have this chance to shoot our thesis film, “the Wanderers”. As a DP of the film, at the beginning of this month, I had meetings with the director and the camera department to plan the shooting schedules and more importantly we discussed the potential issues we may face and list the solution for it. I gained lots of practical experience through this month and I felt what I have learnt is not enough.
The reading resource are very helpful, they prepared me for many problems and I learnt a lot useful advices and knowledge of filmmaking. As a DP, I spent time with my camera operator to experiment and practice with camera movements. Teamwork is the key to success, to clearly communicate my ideas about angles and to trust my team on what they are doing. The biggest problem we have was on the second day, we planned out to shoot the scene in woods but we had to cancel the shooting since the storm came. Even though we quickly wrapped the cameras and equipment but we failed to take everything out of the woods. What I learnt from this is, firstly, people are more valuable than equipment, we should not risk our life to protect the equipment even though they are really important for the film.
Overall, it is great experience to work with many talent people to make this film come true. Even though there are still lots of problems, but I really glad we complete our goals and to have great footages that we need to edit for next month. My advice for preparing thesis film is to prepare for the problems, to understand there are many accidents will happen on the scene, and there are lots of things will be out of control. The solution is to calm down, because panic won’t help you in any way. You need to think about the solution, utilize the resource and people and act efficiently. Of course, no matter which role you take, you need to put your passion in it, to love what you are doing, to love the people you work with, to trust your team, and to listen to the instructor’s advice because they have more experience than you do!
