Amel Larrieux, Singer
I love her
Is there nothing sacred anymore When Celebrities are deified And we’re still calling some countries third world And Crimes against little ones Are punished with little laws And Girls are taught to hide their curves As though they’re flaws And other girls are taught to expose them but not own Them and Boys are taught They can own it all Is there nothing sacred anymore In the 21st century And I still get followed ‘round in stores And Governments are using our money for Reasons other than what they say they’re using it for And Small countries fold as their Big debt keeps on growing and Silent pain is golden under the guise of religion and Boys are taught They can own it all Is there nothing sacred anymore Well maybe there never was, at all

Let’s talk about Amel Larrieux’s flawless cloud hair. This is more or less the way my mom did my hair as a child— braid outs, all the time. Why would I ever stray from this? Why would I not want my hair to take up as much space as possible? Picking out your braid outs is the only way for a thin-haired woman like myself. Noted.
QUESTLOVE + AMEL LARRIEUX
For many years I’d just assumed ?uestlove was the result of a wizard playing a whole Art Blakey solo with afro picks instead of drumsticks, thus summoning from thin air the man we’ve all come to know and love as simply “Questo.” But I was wrong. Questlove was born! He went to prom! He went to prom with Amel Larrieux, the woman who sang this! Questlove is a human and Amel Larrieux is a human and this prom was a #peakprom.

Above the sunset, above the trees Above the highs and lows that make up reality Above the resting place of the body that I leave My love will still be.

I recently made a painting inspired by the trans women of the Embera tribe. Known as, “Wera Pa,” they are frequently forced to flee their tribe due to the prejudice they face. Originally from Colombia, the Embera fled to Panama to avoid persecution. Wera Pa are often forced into menial and dangerous labor far from their homes.
This painting was inspired by an article I read (written in Spanish), which describes the Embera, the two-spirit Wera Pa, and their plight. The photos here are from the article. https://univision.com/noticias/america-latina/wera-pa-mujer-falsa-asi-viven-las-indigenas-transgenero-en-colombia?fbclid=IwAR1fJehV7XAlZsKhoDmr4qeduUkJLy3EldsB35N6Q6C0Tvh5IBawL8jMoLA
My painting of the Embera, in which a trans woman finds love with her partner in an Embera village, imagining love and acceptance where there is too little today. This painting is a print in my etsy shop. https://etsy.com/listing/730115
