The Last Jedi

We saw the same movie, right?

Luke Skywalker TLJ Head-Canon

*spoiler warning*

So, Luke has been my favorite since I was a little girl. So when I saw TLJ and poof! He’s gone. No build up, no emotional reaction. Just a quiet few sentences with Rey and Leia about it and then cut to black?

I got angry.

Luke Skywalker’s death deserves more fanfare.

I get it, it’s kinda like he just moved on to the next phase of exsistance right? He’s one with the force, he’ll be back. I get it. It’s still HIS DEATH. LUKE SKYWALKER. DEATH.

Don’t tell me that doesn’t deserve more than 1 minute of screen time.

So, on my second viewing of TLJ, I was hit with an idea. A really easy re-write. It’s one tiny change.

Luke is dying. He even says “I came to this island to die.” (But runs around as healthy as a horse so this is a rewite.) Maybe he keeps that he’s dying from Rey, and that’s part of the reason he won’t train her. Maybe a shot of him privately hacking his lungs up, and there’s a little blood. But just enough that we the audience know he’s not doing well.

And then we have the bunker. He comes in looking strong and confident, struts out and kicks kylo’s ass. But we as an audience know that this in brovado, we’re worried for him.

Cut to that glorious shot of him floating, a god of the force, spending so much energy, and we’re even more worried.

And it ends, and he falls to the rock. Maybe one extra shot of him breathing heavily, trembling, obviously broken, before he lifts himself up and stares at the suns. And then when he disappears, WE KNOW WHY.
