Depression

Depression isn’t tragically beautiful tears at 2 a.m. It’s trying to force yourself to shower at 9 a.m. because you haven’t in three days. It’s laying awake at 10 p.m. even though you were so tired all day long.

Depression doesn’t hit when you’re alone or it’s late. Depression hits when you’re at a fair with your family, it’s hits when you’re having a day out with your friends, it sneaks up on you whenever it feels like whether you expect it or not.

So please. Please. For the love of God, if you tell someone with depression that you’ll “always be there no matter what” or “you can text me whenever” please for the love of God stand by that. Because I’m not going to text you at 12 p.m. and say “hey I’m depressed right now!” because I’m already beating myself up for bothering you. No, I’m gonna text you at 12 p.m. with a funny picture I think you’ll like or telling you something crazy that happened at work.

Depression isn’t some pretty fashion trend. It doesn’t hit when it’s opportune for all involved. It hits whenever. And those wanting help, or trying to deal with their depression, they aren’t going to straight up say “hey I’m fucking depressed today!” they’re gonna shut down, they’re gonna try to do it themselves, they’re going to do their best to not bother you because they already feel like shit.

So please. For the love of God.

Don’t just abandon them. Even if they shut down. Fucking. Try.
