there are mountains of literal shit on everest. i can only assume people forget that everest is freezing and so poop wont break down the same way as it will when youre camping (or that they dont want to carry bags of poo around). this contaminates glaciers which has began to cause damage to the water supplies of nearby local villages
similarly there are mountains of rubbish. in 2015, it was reported that yearly clean up efforts had removed 15,000kg of rubbish and 800kg of human waste from everest.
because of the high altitude, a bag of poo or rubbish becomes so heavy to carry that it would be deadly to do so.
pollution thanks to littering is a growing problem and one that is hard to fix because of the above point – “Even picking up a candy wrapper high up on the mountain is a lot of effort, because it’s totally frozen and you have to dig around it,”
tourist privilegeÂ
to the average english speaker, “sherpa” has come to mean guide, despite the fact it is a name for an ethnic group.
300 people have died on everest and the last year without a death was 1977. 111 of those deaths are people from nepal.

Let’s be honest - Everest should be cut off from climbers, and the only people that should be allowed up there are ppl who volunteer to clean up all the garbage and human excrement adrenaline junkies have left up there over the decades, and anyone who volunteers to attempt to bring down any bodies of those who died.
The ascent is too dangerous, too many ill-equipped and unprepared climbers try to make the climb, and too much garbage is piling up and poisoning the run off that communities around Everest rely on to live.

I used to do a lot of climbing. Lead, rope, and bouldering. Specifically, highball bouldering. There is one form of climbing I absolutely refuse to do because there are too many negatives to it: Ice climbing.
Everything is always changing. Holds can easily break off or just disappear because it’s ice. The chances of getting hurt or dying are much higher. Frostbite. Mountain sickness. Oxygen deprivation. When avalanches occurs, even people at base camp aren’t safe. You need so much equipment and that’s a lot of weight to lug around. And then there’s waste.
Ice climbing, in my opinion and many professional rock climbers will agree, is just an ego boost. Almost all of these people are here just for that: bragging rights.
That line is fucking ridiculous and makes any long line at Disneyland seem short.
And if they actually make it to the top, more waste. There are so many flags left behind by those “claiming” the mountain.
I mean, just look at that fucking pile. They’re all flags and memorabilias.
And then of course: Death.

You can see Tsewang Paljor aka “green boots.” His team abandoned and left his body. His brother wanted to have the body removed and brought back home but it would’ve cost him over $70k and he didn’t have the means.
And here is Francys Arsentiev aka the Sleeping Beauty.
In 1998, she decided to climb WITHOUT an oxygen bottle. She left her 11 year old son to go climbing. He was encouraging at first but then changed his mind and didn’t want her climbing the mountain. She went anyways. She made it to the top with her second husband who is an “expert.” They had complications coming back down and ended up in the death zone. He fell to his death and she froze to death. Ian Woodall and Cathy O’Dowd, 2 climbers who were with Arentiev in her final hours had failed to save her because they had to leave her due to complications themselves. They went back in 2007 to find and attempt to remove her body. They were haunted by the fact that they couldn’t save her. After 2 attempts, they were able to find her body and lower it into a slope where they believed her second husband fell to his death.
There are bodies with plastic bags over their faces to prevent birds from picking out the eyes.
Many of the bodies in the northside/rainbow ridge has either been removed, buried under rocks, or commited to the mountain (meaning the bodies will get push down into crevices and out of sight, much like Arsentiev).
Typically, though, mountaineers who die on a mountain wish to remain there, a tradition co-opted from seafarers more than a century ago. Honestly, it’s disgusting.
Stop climbing Everest. There are even climbing expedition tours that refuse to take people to Everest.
