Protect people

Rescue people

Defend people

report police misconduct

Don’t:

enforce victimless crimes

steal property

enforce drug laws

pull over people for seatbelts and speeding

break into houses

ticket the homeless

ticket anyone

If you want people to see police as a defense force just like firefighters and paramedics, you’re gonna have to stop doing shit that’s illegal for anyone else to do.

Defense of others: that’s self defense. Overcoming resistance to arrest: that’s using violence against somebody defending their self from being kidnapped and locked away in a cage. Removing trespassers could be considered upholding property rights. Violator of an injunction could be likened to self defense depending on the case. Enforcing evictions, writs, and other orders also goes case by case. Do you think of yourself as a good cop? Because you listed fairly noble things, reasons people want to become police. But you never mentioned pulling people over, arresting drug users, ticketing parked cars, prostitution, or any of the victimless crimes that Americans find themselves at odds with on a daily basis.
