Hey did you know that you can’t escape fatphobia even after death? The article talks about how these donated bodies are used for first year anatomy students to study the body, and how the 'perfect' body for that should be 170-180 pounds.
Frankly, this is a new motivator to get and remain lean. But I did read the article and you can’t call it fatphobia when they have genuine reasons to refuse people of a very high BMI.
They state that they refuse particularly tall bodies as well because they simply are too large to fit on their trays
Embalming makes the body much heavier (250 lbs becomes 350-400 lbs) and would make the specimens too difficult to be handled by lab technicians and students especially if they are smaller
They are for anatomy studies, cutting through thick layers of fat makes it more difficult for students to get to organs/other tissues
Obese bodies may get sent to be used for other training and they don’t mention it in the article but they also refuse bodies with too low of a BMI. You could make the argument that they should learn how to operate on fat bodies but this is specifically talking about first years. And the reasons for BMI limits on surgeries are rarely about the surgeons themselves but because of the nature of anaesthesia, challenges in emergency situations and recovery.
They also refuse organ donations from obese donors because not only is it harder to collect, but obesity is a risk in and of itself for conditions like type 2 diabetes, non alcoholic fatty liver syndrome, and other health conditions that make the organs unusable for donation.
This isn't fatphobia. This is basic science and the consequences of your actions.
