I've discussed the way that the pandemic has affected minority communities such as those in ethnic minority communities and those in the LGBTQ communities. The pandemic has also been very hard on girls and women across the world. Many people lost their jobs and for women in abusive relationships that means they lost their only escape from their abusive partner. Lockdown turned a bad situation into an even worse and more deadly one. There are also concerns around the world that girls who were able to receive an education prior to the pandemic may not be able to go back as their families find ways to control them. As the world opens back up, we need to ensure that girls and women get the help that they need gaining their independence back across the globe.

This is actually something that I hadn't heard about yet. War has broken out in the area and people are fleeing trying to get away from the violence. Girls are being raped and beaten across the area. Tigray refuges are not receiving the humanitarian aid that they need due to Ethiopia not allowing organizations into the region. The refugees of Tigray are in desperate need to help otherwise they may face losing even more of their lives not only to the violence there but also starvation. This has been happening since November 2020 and this is the first I have heard of it happening. We talk a big game about caring about human rights but when things are actually happening like this or the Xinjiang internment camps in China, the media and officials don't do much to call out those countries. If the United States and other countries really cared about human rights as much as they say that they do then they should be doing more.

This article interested me after having our conversation in class the other day about FGM. We talked a lot about how we could educate and stop the procedure of FGM and these projects that the European Union started are very interesting. They're hoping to stop FGM and sexual based violence against women by opening up the community to the rights of girls and women and their hope is for it to be community led and in turn reducing the violence against girls and women. The procedures of FGM are so embedded into these cultures, no matter how they came about, that simply telling people in those cultures that it is wrong and that they shouldn't do that won't work at fixing the problem. FGM may have started as a way to control girls and women and their sexuality but now it's so embedded that girls go through it because of their religion and its a social or honor obligation. Due these procedures, there needs to be extensive education in the cultures but it also needs to heavily involve the community. If community members are learning about the effects and then in turn will turn into the educators of what the FGM procedures truly mean for girls and women, then there won't be the change that people want to see.

This article was interesting to me given what we talked about today in class. We are all well aware of how egregious Trump's immigration policies were but the entire U.S. immigration system has been broken for years. One of Biden's promises on the campaign trail was to address what Trump did during his time in office but he has been slow to show any actual proof that he is reversing what Trump did. Personally, I have seen the damage of what Trump's policies do to families up close. It's disgusting what the U.S. immigration system is doing to families and there needs to be better solutions than what there is now. Biden's administration has still illegally expelled asylum seekers back to the countries they were seeking asylum from. While the election of Joe Biden let many people across the country and around the world take a deep breath, many people who voted for Biden are frustrated with the administration's lack of action on fixing what is wrong with our immigration system currently.

For cisgender people, being told by your government that you have a mental illness just for the way you identify, is unheard of and would spark outrage. In Japan, and many other countries across the world, transgender people still are subject to long outdated laws and opinions on their wellbeing and how they can be legally recognized after transitioning. Laws that still allow outdated practices to occur are not only abusive but also dangerous to the wellbeing of every transgender person who is subjected to them. This isn't just an issue about whether trans people can identify the way that they want to but it is also an issue about their access to proper healthcare, whether or not they can work in a safe workplace without discrimination, and many other issues. We can't focus on those more important issues if we are still stuck on antiquated practices that make it harder for trans people to live the life that they want.

The Egyptian government has engaged in human rights violations since President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi took office in 2014. With France now allowing for the sale of $4.5 billion of their war planes to Egypt, we can only assume the terror will continue. These fighter jets will obviously give Egypt more military power over their citizens, sparking even more concern. France claims that they care about human rights and it is a priority in the foreign policy but if they truly cared about human rights they would have looked at what has been going on in Egypt for years and not sold their fighter jets to them. It is a gross misuse of their power and resources for a country that claims to care about human rights.

In yesterday's post I talked about how the COVID-19 pandemic has disproportionately affected LGBTI people but now I want to focus on how it has affected the Asian community across the world. Donald Trump while he was in office often referred to the coronavirus as the "Chinese virus" and that kind of use of language is a part of the issue that is putting the Asian community at risk. It is making anyone who may look Asian a target for violence as the former president seemed to place the blame for the pandemic on China. Further language like that used by people across the world has only continued to inspire vicious attacks on Asians and yet nothing has been done by governments, including the U.S. government, to help stop the violence.

Discrimination toward LGBTI people sadly is something we are all too aware of. But this past year during the COVID-19 pandemic I think it really highlighted the inequalities amongst LGBTI people as well as other minorities. We talked in class today about how we are now starting to look at healthcare as a human right. This pandemic has highlighted why healthcare should be a human right that is protected as minority groups such as LGBTI people have their healthcare protections threatened to be taken away. While many people have been negatively affected by this pandemic, minorities have been disproportionately affected.

The conflict between Israelis and Palestinians has been going on for decades. With the current surge in violence in the region, many people were hoping that President Biden would take a different approach and call out the Israelis for their disregard for Palestinian lives. But the president hasn't done so, instead saying that Israel has the right to defend themselves. But he and his administration do this while ignoring the hundreds of people who are dead as a result of Israel's airstrikes including over 50 children. If the Biden administration says that they are focused on human rights in their foreign policy then why is it standing by and watching Israel kill Palestinian civilians.
