Since it’s my current job to constantly find hidden gems in and around Seoul, I try to avoid going to the same restaurant (save some local fried chicken joints). So, it’s surprising that I’ve found myself here at King 수제만두 (King Handmade Dumplings) three times within a week. They specialize in dumplings and one of my current favorites: Mapo Tofu. This is not a Koreanized version (which isn’t bad at all) and instead shows all signs of authentic Sichuan - salty, fiery, and umami-rich coming from the fermented doubanjiang sauce. Curiosity was sparked so I asked a few questions, which I got blank answers. Then I realized the place is run by a young Chinese couple and their helping hand mother, still only six months young near Sinseoldong Station, Exit 2. Dak Baeksuk (Boiled Whole Chicken w Aromatics) and premium makgeolli called Damun Makgeolli. Can’t say this was a decent meal only because the makgeolli ruined everything. Imagine drinking condensed milk spiked with an unknown hard liquor (soju?) and that’s what you get here. Bossam Jeongsik, a set meal featuring tender pieces of boiled pork with lettuce wraps, a rich beef broth, and a few sides. I’m not fond of any chain restaurants but this local place always catches my attention because it’s packed with jovial diners who look zoned in on the food.
