In 1991, Saint Michael the Archangel was sent by God to learn about humanity from humans themselves within the structure of university. He established an identity as Michael Demiurgos, majored in the dictated fields of biology and anthropology, earned a degree in three years, and returned to Heaven without intending to interact that closely with humanity again.

In 1999, God sent Michael back to Earth with no direct commands, so he simply returned to his alma mater of Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore and became a medical student, then an intern, then a resident, then a fellow, and suddenly, it was 2011 and he was a respected cardiothoracic surgeon with a penchant for being absolutely horrible at human emotion. Regardless, he felt accomplished, or something along those lines. Unfortunately, 2011 was also when his twin decided to take a 'vacation' from Hell by tricking their older brother, so Michael was called back to Heaven to assist God.

Then it was 2016, and God had quietly kicked him from Heaven, and he'd just as quietly moved to Los Angeles. A crisis in 2018 slammed him back into Lucifer's life, and an incident in 2019 brought Ella Lopez into his.

Tips for Writing Trauma!

i love you all and i need you to stop writing trauma as a single breakdown scene in the rain after which the character is Healed and Ready to Love Again. that is NOT trauma :(

⊹ Trauma doesn't announce itself. it shows up as your character suddenly not being able to eat a specific food, or going very quiet in a loud room, or laughing at the wrong moment because their nervous system decided that was the appropriate response. it's mundane and weird and it makes no sense from the outside. the dramatic flashback sequence is the least realistic part. the most realistic part is your character suddenly needing to leave a grocery store for a reason they can't articulate.

⊹ The body keeps score and it keeps it in the strangest places. a particular smell. the quality of light at a certain time of day. a tone of voice that sounds like someone who hurt them. your traumatised character doesn't think "this reminds me of the bad thing." their heart rate spikes and they don't know why. they feel wrong and they can't locate the feeling. they're irritable for three days and only later, if ever, do they make the connection. write the disconnection. it's more honest.

⊹ trauma also does not make people universally sympathetic and wise. it makes some people controlling. some people funny at inappropriate times. some people very good in a crisis and completely unable to handle a normal day. some people are generously kind to strangers and absolutely terrible to people they love. trauma shapes behaviour in contradictory, inconvenient ways that don't resolve into a lesson. your traumatised character can be difficult to like. that's not a flaw in the writing. that's the WRITING.

⊹ Healing is not linear and it is not a destination. your character does not get better and stay better. they have a good month and then something small undoes two years of progress and they have to start again with slightly more tools than before. that's the actual shape of it. the spiral, not the arc. the scene where they finally open up and cry is not the end. it might not even be progress. sometimes it just means they were tired that night.

Leather and Lace

New Fic! This is a one-shot for Fuckuary (Lucifer February Prompt Month) and the prompt is Leather.

Deckerstar, Established Relationship, Rating: E

Summary:

Lucifer is no longer in a suit, half undone or otherwise, but in skin tight, lace-up leather pants, boots, a collar, and nothing else. The pants are low-slung, barely covering him. There is a visible stripe of skin from the tops of his boots to his waist. Chloe discovers some old photographs of Lucifer. He offers to recreate them.

Snippet:

Sipping her coffee, hair still mussed from sleep, Chloe idly runs her fingers over the books in Lucifer’s library—Hamlet, The Picture of Dorian Gray, Also sprach Zarathustra. On a whim, she pulls out a copy of Le Comte de Monte-Cristo. First edition, of course. Signed by the author, of course. She doesn’t know if she’ll ever get used to it. She turns the page—it’s in French—and some loose papers flutter out.

Oops.

Crouching, she scoops them off the floor, but they aren’t parts of the book or related notes. They are photographs.

They are photographs of Lucifer. A photo shoot.

She leafs through them. The first few are of him in a sleek suit, jacket hanging off his arms or gone, shirt mostly unbuttoned, and a tie loosely slung around his neck. He looks like temptation—like he just had sex with the photographer, is about to, or both. And, yeah, that tracks.

She can’t make out much of the room—it’s too dark—but there’s a small table with a bottle of scotch, a glass, and a cigarette, the smoke winding upward. One side of his mouth quirks up into a dangerous smile, inviting her in. Heat pools between her legs. The penthouse feels much too warm all of a sudden.

Chloe takes another sip of her coffee. Should she go find him right now? She is pivoting when she catches a glimpse of the other photos. Carefully placing her cup on a nearby table, she pulls them out of the pile.

There are three photographs of him with a classic convertible, but she couldn’t have described anything else about the car or its surroundings if her life depended on it.
