HOW TO GET UP TO DATE ON YOUR DREDD STUFF IN ORDER TO READ "A BETTER WORLD"
So, in the last newsletter, I made the claim that absolute banger storylines like "A Better World" made Judge Dredd the actual greatest ongoing comic in the world. I also said that it was payoff for like, 12 years of comics! Which begs the question: how would one get caught up, if one wanted to get the most out of "A Better World" and its follow-up, set to arrive in the prog at the very start of 2025? I'm not going to sugarcoat it: it's going to take a lot of reading, and while a lot of it is gonna be straightforward, as we draw closer to now it's going to get bumpy. I'm gonna put some checkpoints in this list: if you meet the requirements, or just don't care, skip to the next checkpoint. Nothing is required because it's a list, not the law.
CHECKPOINT ONE: DO YOU EVEN KNOW WHAT JUDGE DREDD IS?
This is the base curriculum for all things Dredd; even if you didn't want to get current, I'd advise that you start here, for two reasons. First: watching the creators of Dredd figure out what works and what doesn't, pretty much in real time, will give you the actual best crash course. Second: these are foundational Dredd stories, that are being referenced to this very day. It's the most simple part, and it goes like this.
JUDGE DREDD: THE COMPLETE CASE FILES 01
JUDGE DREDD: THE COMPLETE CASE FILES 02
OPTIONAL: THE CURSED EARTH UNCENSORED
JUDGE DREDD: THE COMPLETE CASE FILES 03
JUDGE DREDD: THE COMPLETE CASE FILES 04
JUDGE DREDD: THE COMPLETE CASE FILES 05
It is that easy. That's every single Dredd published in the prog for the first five years. You have to read all of it, and then you have enough context that you can just skip around in the Dredd repertoire (THIS IS WHAT WE ARE TRYING TO DO).
CHECKPOINT TWO: GETTING INTO MODERN DREDD
We're skipping over a whole bunch of stuff, including the entire 1990s, and getting back with "Origins", because it's narratively convenient, and it gives us an entry into "Tour of Duty", which is basically a whole year of Modern Dredd business which will go nicely into our next checkpoint. We have two ways of doing that.
ESSENTIAL JUDGE DREDD: ORIGINS
ESSENTIAL JUDGE DREDD: TOUR OF DUTY BOOK ONE
ESSENTIAL JUDGE DREDD: TOUR OF DUTY BOOK TWO
ESSENTIAL JUDGE DREDD: TOUR OF DUTY BOOK THREE
This is where things start to get hairy; our beloved Complete Case Files cover "Origins" in its totality, but it has not caught up to all of "Tour of Duty" just yet; fastest way to get the whole picture is to wait for a book coming in April of 2025. This makes this checkpoint kinda mandatory, instead of mandatory mandatory; gives you a feel for the whole thing.
CHECKPOINT THREE: THE DAY OF CHAOS
Being the latest Huge Status Quo Shift in Mega-City One, it is essential context for all the comics that follow. This is where I would start, really, but having read the previous book can help.
JUDGE DREDD: DAY OF CHAOS VOL. 1 - THE FOURTH FACTION
JUDGE DREDD: DAY OF CHAOS VOL. 2 - ENDGAME
JUDGE DREDD: DAY OF CHAOS VOL. 3 - FALLOUT
This is very straightfoward, and although some of the timeline goes past where our next checkpoint begins, it's not by much, so, who even cares.
CHECKPOINT FOUR: ENTER ROB WILLIAMS
Ok, finally we're getting to the part where the actual seeds of "A Better World" actually get planted; we'll get into how to cut that even smaller, but this covers a lot and as a bonus it gets you the best crossover event in comics history.
JUDGE DREDD: THE SMALL HOUSE
JUDGE DREDD: A BETTER WORLD
So: that's seven trades; I think each provides necessary context for the next, but I understand your time is short, so, if you have to cut it, I'd cut everything before "End of Days" and start there. All it takes then is "Silence" (progs 2401 and 2402) and you're ready for "Soft".
It's a long running comic. Nearly every part matters. THIS IS AS SIMPLE AND AS CONVENIENT AS I COULD MAKE THAT LIST, AND I AM SORRY.
