let's do it, let's fall in--wait.
With a heavy sigh, Penny dropped the files of the case she had been working on for the past few weeks, on her desk at the precinct. Her head was aching from having stayed up until late hours the night before, trying to find any leads, or anything at all that could help her catch the bad guys and save the day. Penelope guessed that she could have asked for Hunter’s opinion on this, since it could be helpful to have an outsider taking a look, a pair of fresh eyes to the case, but she was tired of always asking his opinion on cases. She could do her job just fine without him, despite their obvious friendship. This case, though… This was a puzzle to her. It was nothing like Marshall Koning’s death had been… a valuable target. This time, no one of high importance had died… Well, except for the police commissioner, but Penelope was convinced that Mr. Porter had been collateral damage… You know, accidents happen and that kind of crap. But she wanted to make it right, by trying to tie down all of these casualties and maybe get to the bottom of everything.
From her desk, she could see Hunter hunched over some papers, looking at files, pictures and writing things down. Penelope particularly enjoyed the way his hazel-brown, almost a dark shade of blond hair would fall over his forehead, casting a shadow over his baby blue eyes. He looked preoccupied, which caused the brunette to arch one brow. Not that Hunter wasn’t good at his job, or didn’t work at all, but she hardly ever saw that crease on his forehead… Which, she figured, was the reason why she got up from her chair and made her way towards her best friend’s desk. Luckily, people seemed busy enough in the precinct not to bother her with questions or to request she would be somewhere with someone, making some arrests. At least she could spend, if not some quality hours, then good five minutes in the company of her best friend. The tip of her fingers trailed along the edge of his desk, until she knocked twice on the wood, stealing Hunter’s attention and shifting it towards her.
"Hey you." Penelope smiled as she picked up a piece of paper that was close to her hand and taking a good look at it. Perhaps now she could be the one to offer him a new perspective on whichever case he was working on. "Do you need any—no, do you know what?" The brunette turned around, in order to face him, instead of simply standing by his side. She tilted her head to the side, crossing her arms as she rested her thigh on the edge of his desk, and shrugged casually. "What are you doing after your shift? I think we could use some time off. These goddamn crimes are getting the best of us. What do you say, want to get something to drink?"
Hunter hadn't moved in awhile. After a certain allotted amount of time, they were required to take a fifteen minute break due to a California state law. No one ever knew if the officer did or didn't take a break because it wasn't recorded which was likely why he was able to get away with not taking one on that particular day. His desk was a mess. There was an empty coffee cup on the far corner that threatened to fall off and make just a tiny bit of noise against the tiles, pieces of papers were scattered in an unorganized manner. He had several files open and due to the wreck he had piled on his desk, they all became just a tiny bit intertwined with one another. He squinted in a way that when he read the words on the pages, it felt as though his eyes might burst into a grotesque confetti if he tried to continue. Regardless of the small pangs of fatigue he felt, he felt the need to press on.
Which he most likely would have tried to do. He would eventually get to the point that he knew each line of every single page and he would be able to recite it all in his sleep to no one in particular. Everywhere he went, the files went with him. At first, he had been told to keep them solely at the office but after awhile, he became a little bit forgetful. When he heard someone move close to him which slowly caused him to glance to see who it was. His facial expression changed to a sense of relief when eh saw that it was his friend, Penelope. "Hey you." Hunter smiled at her. While he had slept a full night the night before, he still felt tired. Maybe it was the lack of movement on his part. He had known her for awhile, they had a sort of close friendship-coworker relationship that other officers strived for. It came simple of them. At least, that was how Hunter thought it to be with Penelope.
After his shift. Hunter glanced at the clock and realized that was only a matter of a few minutes away. "I don't know. I guess I'd probably take a shower, eat dinner." Hunter had no idea why he felt the need to offer his schedule to her, but he did and then shrugged afterwards. The idea of a drink didn't seem so bad. He hadn't spent too much time at the office, not enough time anywhere else. "Yeah. You know what, that'd be good. We haven't hung out in awhile." He missed her, a quiet way to put it. Even when they worked so close together during much of the week, it wasn't the same as when they spent actual time together. "Friday the thirteenth. We better change outta these uniforms before we go anywhere." He joked. It wasn't funny. The last thing he needed was another case and for it to be Penelope, that would kill him. "Where do you wanna go, Pen?"
